Indian Army Gets Control Over Attack Helicopters ​

Nothwithstanding stiff opposition from the Air Force, government has decided to give the control of attack helicopters to the Army.

"We have received a letter from the defence ministry and we have been given the attack helicopters by the government," Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh told PTI here.

The Army had been demanding control over attack and medium-lift helicopters saying they are mainly used for its operations and that is why they should be under it. The IAF has been strongly opposing the demand.

Army had been maintaining that the induction of tactical and attack choppers into the force was an "inescapable operational necessity" as infrastructure along the borders with China is "far from satisfactory" and such assets would be required to cut down on the time for movement.

The tussle between the two Services over the issue had come out in open when IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne said the country cannot afford to have these "little air forces" doing their own things.

Defence Minister A K Antony had played down the tussle, saying it was a "family problem" and the Government was in the final stages of resolving the matter.

As per its plans, the Army wants to raise attack chopper squadrons as part of its strike corps and then raise them at every corps level.

The IA Pilots are an assert for CAS operations coz at some point in time they themselves were soldiers.

This move will allow the Army to be more flexible in its approach during a battle scenario, and its dependence on Air Force will be also be reduced to a great extent. Great going.

An idea who's time has come. But what about the orders already placed by the IAF, all the LCHs and mi-17V5s and apaches? What about the new Mi-17s already in operation with the IAF? Will all these be transferred to the army, or is there going to be duplication of mandates?

i interprit it as all the current rotary wing assets will be handed over to IA in a phased manner. though i think the heavy lift & heavy attach choppers will be retainded by IAF. all the light & mediunlift & attack choppers will be handed over to IA.

IAF is buying Apache with its own money. They will not transfer the control of aircraft bought by their money.

IA will raise new squadrons of LCH... Cant say anything about the Hinds.

why is this wedge btwn the national defense forces ? its a open breach of rules. ego problem ? let the better strategist (situational war planner IA/IAF, i say airforce initiates the war, but the ultimate joy of victorious conquest goes to the army on the enemy ground )

What most AFs do that don't operate the majority of the rotary wing assets. Anyways the IAF has its hands full enough with inductions left right and centre this is a load of their mind.



A few Qs arise though:
-Will IAF still get their LCHs and ALH WSI that are on order?
-Will the Apaches that will be arriving in the next 36 months be delviered to the IAF or IA AAC?
-What will happen to the MIL-17 V5 fleet down the road?

if army is getting its own choppers..why even provide IAF with LCH...? does it even make sense...only one, the army, must be allowed to operate the lch....
