Purvi Patel, a northern Indiana woman whom authorities say put the body of her premature baby in a restaurant trash bin, said nothing about the charges as she made her first court appearance.
Thirty-two-year-old Purvi Patel of Granger had a scarf over her head as she walked to and from a St. Joseph County courtroom July 18 and did not respond to questions from reporters. A judge entered a preliminary not guilty plea for her on charges of felony neglect of a dependent.
Court documents say the Indian American woman took drugs she obtained from Hong Kong to induce an abortion, but an autopsy found that the baby was born alive July 13 about 12 weeks premature.
Police say the infant's body was found late July 13 outside a Mishawaka restaurant after Patel went to a hospital.
Earlier this month, hospital staff called police when Patel went to an emergency room bleeding, with the umbilical cord still protruding, but had no baby with her.
Patel told doctors she had never been pregnant but later told them she miscarried and put the body in the dumpster behind the Mishawaka restaurant that she manages.
The affidavit says a forensic pathologist concluded the infant could have survived outside of the womb and did take a breath after it was born.
Patel will appear in court again July 31 before St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Hurley.
