NEW DELHI: India and the US have finalised a Rs 3000-crore deal for supplying 99 jet engines to be used in the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas' being developed by the DRDO.

Around two years ago, India had selected the American company General Electric over its rival European Eurojet 2000 for the LCA Mark II programme expected to be ready around 2014-15.

"The deal worth Rs 3,000 crore has been finalised with the US for procuring 99 engines for the LCA Tejas MkII," DRDO officials said here.

As per the contract, the order could be for 99 engines initially but India will have the option of ordering another 100 engines in the future.

The engine on offer for the LCA Mark II is GE F-414 engine, which are more powerful that the GE F-404 engines fitted in the first batch of LCAs that the Indian Air Force would receive in near future.

The need for changing the existing engines in the LCAs was felt after the IAF found out that the GE-404 engines were not providing enough power to the aircraft and more powerful engines were needed for the purpose.

The DRDO is developing the LCA Mk II to meet the Air Force requirements and it will have latest technological equipment including the Active Electronic Scanned Array (AESA) radar and would be able to carry more payload than the LCA Mk I.

Recently, the trials of the LCA Mk I were carried out in Pokharan desert firing range where laser-guided bombs and other weapon systems were tried.

As per the current plans, the IAF will induct twosquadrons of the LCA Mk I which would be followed by delivery of LCA Mk II aircraft.

India bought his security from US... very cheap!

BTW why Indian deals have digit nine at end i.e. 99 engines, 189 Rafale etc. Why you guys don't add 1 more and get some round figure

My dear troll, have you even read the article? Where did you see even a single mention of JF-17??

Anyways, JF-17 or not, why is a Bangladeshi so excited? Last I knew, BD has some crappy F-7s.

Ahhh! Hmm! Ok! I'm excited to see how Indian defence is going through such show off. Looks really stupid.

As far as the number of Rafale goes, it was after a logical calculation keeping in mind our squadron strength and war time spares. I guess the number of engines might be due to some other factors. Experts please help @sancho @Abingdonboy

So many backs on fire on this thread for just a deal of 99 engines. God only knows what will happen when Rafale lands in India. :woot:

Actually yes, we bought the "cheaper" engine for LCA, because it's meant to be a stop gap solution. But no need for envy only because you long term supplier provides us now too and that even with better deals. :rolleyes:

This engine deal is nothing new, but the reactions are always the same whenever India buys something new, because other countries don't have the access to foreign defence markets like we have.
Wrt the number of engines, they are meant for LCA MK2 of IAF and some prototypes, the number might increase, depending on how many N-LCA will be ordered at the end and what progress the Kaveri engine makes.

Let me float theory, If you multiply any number with 9 and keep adding digits of result to reach single digit, that digit will always 9 for example

1) 99 * 9 = 891 --> 8+9+1 = 18 --> 1+8 = 9
2) 189 * 9 = 1701 --> 1+7+0+1 = 9
3) 199 * 9 = 1791 --> 1+7+9+1 = 18 --> 1+8=9
and so on ....

Is in 9 some scared digit for Indians :angel:
