India to test fire sub-sonic cruise missile Nirbhay next year - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Looking to add more lethal firepower to its arsenal, India is planning to test fire its latest 1000-km range sub-sonic land attack cruise missile 'Nirbhay' early next year.

Nirbhay will be a terrain hugging, stealthy missile capable of delivering multiple warheads as per mission requirements.

"We are looking to test-fire the new sub-sonic cruise missile in the first quarter of 2012. The Nirbhay will be a new state-of-the-art missile," DRDO officials told PTI here.

With its range of 1,000 Km, the missile has longer reach than Pakistan's Hatf-7 Babur missile, which claims to have a range of 700 km.

The missile is being developed by the Advanced Systems Laboratory under the DRDO.

Sources said the missile will be sleeker than other similar weapon systems that are operational with different countries.

The Nirbhay will be India's second cruise missile after the 300 km range BrahMos, which is a supersonic system. The missile can be launched from multiple launchers and will be inducted into all the three services.India to test fire sub-sonic cruise missile Nirbhay next year

We do need a reliable weapon delivery system. India is doing fine with indigenous and buying advance weapon systems from west, russia and Israel.

After Agni2P, Agni5 on line then Nirbhay. DRDO is really working hard now a days

Any test schedule for ABM test?

New missiles tests in line.... Prahaar, Agni-2P, Agni-5 and now Nirbhay. If everything goes well the subsonic long range cruise missile will be tested n December/January. The project started way back in 2004. It is designed to be stealthy apart from so called terrain hugging capabilities. Here data generated by IRS-P5 will be handy.

Looking at the size of the launcher i dnt think so... its enoumous.

isn't that prahaar launcher ?
i guess sleek nirbhay will have canister launcher lke bhramos

No it is not Prahaar for sure because we have already seen Prahhar which is a version o AAD. This 'prahaar launcher' thing is spread by the idiot sengupta.

Shiv aroor just named a tomahawk, 'nirbhay'. nirbhay will be different. it will be stealthy.

^^^ The project is going on but it will take time. First test would be around 2013/14. It will be the primary nuclear delivery system for the IAF.

Spot on!!It's most probably called the ADM (Air Delivered Munition).
By the way, atleast for once the Chor Gupta is right that the NPOL developed sonars like the Humsa NG,Nagan,Ushus etc are not ultra low frequency types;instead all these systems fall into very low frequency type (according to the official website)which by the way a generation ahead of contemporary Russian low frequency sonars. At present only the US and France(Thales) have mastered the ultra low frequency sonars.I think it's time for NPOL to start development for such a system.

Yeah, you are right. It's the Nirbhay launcher. But the Prahar launcher which we saw during the test flight was most probably not the definitive version of the launch vehicle as it was reported that each launch vehicle will be armed with 6-8 Prahar NLOS BSMs.And it doesn't make any sence to mount only one missile per launcher as the Army's future offencive strategy is based on rapid accurate fire support which isn't possible with the launch vehicle we saw.
