India to Float 2nd Buy for Jet Trainers?
18-Mar-2009 13:43 EDT
The induction of advanced jet trainers into Indias Air Force has been a long and difficult process. After a nuumber of false starts, and indigenous efforts like HALs Ajeet that didnt quite live up to expectations, a 20-year procurement process came to an end when India selected BAEs Hawk 115Y as its future advanced jet trainer in 2004. The 66-plane order included options for another 40.
The Press Trust of India reports that Indias Air Force has elected not to pick up that option. That is not an unusual occurrence. What is unusual, is a follow-on competition thrown open to international competitors, in a February 2009 RFP. The RFP was reportedly sent to the Czech Republics Aero Vodochody (L-159), Italys Alenia (M-346), BAE (Hawk, but it would be a more advanced variant), Koreas KAI (T-50s), and Russia (YAK-130 variant of the M346 joint project, or MiG AT).
The move was reportedly triggered by supply delays to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which is supposed to assemble a number of the Hawks in India.
