Mumbai : Indian Navy’s first indigenous Vikrant-class aircraft carrier being built at the Cochin Shipyard Limited will be commissioned by 2019; and the plans to build a second one will be initiated soon, announced Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, the Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, at a press conference held on-board the INS Vikramaditya on Wednesday.

Vice Admiral Chopra discussed several important matters pertaining to the Indian Navy at its annual interaction with the media held at the massive aircraft carrier. He also hinted at the decommissioning of the over 50-year-old aircraft carrier INS Viraat. “We are in the process of appointing a technical board which will review INS Viraat’s viability,” he said.

At any given time, India needs to have at least two aircraft carriers in service. When INS Viraat gets decommissioned, it will become all the more important for the Navy to get another one.

Besides this, Navy’s first Scorpion class submarine is also expected to be ready by 2015 and commissioned by 2016. “The Centre has also sanctioned six more submarines and the tenders for the same will be floated soon,” Vice Admiral Chopra added. However, being one of the largest Navies in the world, the Indian Navy is facing a shortage of helicopters. “That issue is being addressed currently with the sanction of 16 helicopters (Dhruv Mk III Advanced Light Helicopters) expected to come soon,” he said.

Addressing the issue of piracy in international waters on India’s western coast and the obvious threat to mariners, Vice Admiral Chopra said that ever since the problem of piracy began with the fall of the Somalian government in 2008, constant patrolling is being done in the Gulf of Aden. “We have one warship in the Gulf of Aden for patrolling and security purposes. Every merchant ship which crosses the Suez Canal is escorted by a warship to ensure its security,” he said, “Although the problem of piracy is decreasing, we will continue with the stringent patrolling.”

In 2009-10, with the Suez Canal having such security issues, merchant ships had changed their course and were sailing via the waters closer to the Indian coast, which has also led to the Navy stepping up its security. The developing economy and increasing trade have also led to an increase in the number of ships coming to the ports on India’s Western Coast, including the fast-developing Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. These and the ever-looming terror threat ever since 26/11 have also prompted the Navy to increase its security here.

Vice Admiral Chopra also announced that a few old ships are going to be decommissioned in the near future. However, the Navy is hopeful of increasing its employees, ships, fighter aircrafts and helicopters in the near future.

Any current pics? Is the bridge built yet?

Not sure but around 85 per cent of the hull is complete and 90 per cent of the fabrication is over. 85 per cent of the erection was over by October this year.

Commodore K Subramaniam (Retd), CSL Chairman and Managing Director told the press that many elements of innovations were being incorporated in the building of the aircraft carrier. For instance, the Navy wanted a 14 degree ski-jump in the foxle of the ship for easy taking off of fighter planes, for which a big piece of iron had to be welded, which was also trimming down the ship to the front. They have employed a big piece of iron in the hull area, which will function as a buoyant, which has made the keel of the hull float horizontally. Likewise, they have made many innovations in the building.

Replying to a query, he said the degree of indigenous equipment in the aircraft carrier was very high, barring the aviation, for which the county was dependent on Russia. "We can say around 80 per cent of the ship is indigenous."

Elaborating on the localisation, he said that the metal sheets used for the building of the ship was designed by the Hyderabad-based Defence Research Development Laboratory and production was being done by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

Mate,Vikrant won't carry any anti-ship missile as it is an aircraft carrier and the I.N. doctrine in this case is different than that of the Soviet Navy.It will however carry Barak-8(maybe the Barak-8 ER version) MRSAM and a CIWS possibly a combination go AK-630M and Barak-1 missiles.

The gun-based CIWS will not be the AK-630, the IN has an ongoing tender to find a new generation of gun-based CIWS.

. . .
it will carry 24 mig29k fighters and up to 12 helicpoters and 2 awacs planes tonnes 40k

As @Mike_Brando has stated the IAC-1 will have a gun-based CIWS, the BARAK-2 LR-SAM and possibly the BARAK-1 CIWS. Having said that the IN follows the USN/Western concept wherein the firepower lies in the CBG as such the IAC (and Viky) will have P-15A Kolkata Class destroyers (in the future P-15Bs), P-17 Shivlaik Frigates (in the future P-17As) or Talwar class frigates as well as ASW P-28 Corvettes, SSKs and support ships like Deepak Class FRS. The-P-15A/P-15B, P-17/P-17A and IAC-1 will all have the BARAK-2 LR-SAM.

(note the P-15A/B, P-17/A and Talwar Classes all will be carrying a serious number of Brahmos cruise missiles also)

The P-15A, P-17A and IAC-1 will be equipped with the EL/M-2248 MF-STAR, the P-15Bs, P-17As and IAC-1 will also have the RAN-40L Volume Search Radar which will arguably be one of the most capable sensor compliments on the high seas. This is all before we talk about the air wing incorporating fighters, advanced AW helos (S-70B) and AEW helos. All in all a devastatingly deadly CBG.

So Mr. Modify has a chance to commission vikrant on sea.8-)

The semi-finished hull is floating there for so many years, hope it won't get rusty before year 2019. Typical Indian way of doing things.

No surprise, delay, low efficiency, hyper, bought.

guys this is going to be a incredible acheivememnt.

even a Pakistani wont deny that this is awesome work to build indengious carriers of such size expense and capability

If the Russia don't provide you the steel, you can't even make a mockup of it. Please use the word 'indigenous' carefully. ram? CIWS? fighter jets? propulsion? radar? control units? tell me which one you can produce indigenous?

Please take care of the boiler this time, don't blame China fire bricks any more.

According to my previous experience of Indians' efficiency, this one can't be completed until year 2022.
