India to be called 'Bharat' ?

Shantaram Naik, Congress MP from Goa, on Friday sought a Constitution amendment bill in the Rajya Sabha to call the country simply 'Bharat' and not 'India'.

His private member bill seeks to amend the Preamble and Article 1 of the Constitution of India to drop India and use 'Bharat'. It says the words 'India, that is Bharat' in sub-clause 1 of Article be replaced with just 'Bharat'.

The grounds for changing the name of the country into simply 'Bharat' are many but, more than the grounds or reasons, it is the sense of patriotism that the name generates and electrifies the people of this country that is relevant, Naik noted.

The Congress MP quoted a lyric from the 1965 film Sikandar-E-Aazam to buttress his case: "Jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiyan karti hai basera, woh Bharat desh hai mera."

What are your views on the debate? Should India be called just 'Bharat'? So after their 300% pay increase, our MPs have no important issues to discuss ?

If changing the name of the country or any region is gonna help reduce any of our problems then am all for it...otherwise .....there are a lot of other issues which need to be addressed in the parliament if our honorable members stop fighting on pay hike...this issue would lead to another time pass discussion with taxpayers money

Minorities should learn to respect the Past Heritage of the Land. Everywhere Sharia and Jesus will not follow where ever these religions settle. Should get accustomed to the local Culture.

I am not sure who coined the word 'India'.

The word "India" comes originally from "Sindhu" the local name of Indus River in Sindh. The Persian substituted "S" for "H" to call inhabitants "Hindu". The ancient Greeks used the version of the name to call it "India".

i dont think so minorities will mind changing hindustan or india to bharat. Already you are forcing down mera bharat mahan shahan. whats the big deal if its changed or even unchanged.

The minorities already dont have anything left to be hurt further so its not an issue i guess.

Bharata was the name of the king who had conquered what is now India, Pakistan and almost all Bangladesh...His reign was knownas Bharat-varsh ....and hence the name Bharat.

It has no religious or any kinds conotations....

THat being said --its a stupid idea....India is the way to go ...
