Firstly even I am not sure if we ever claimed back the peak 5353. But that was not the point of Kargil War.

Pakistani Rangers in the guise of militias occupied more than 148 peaks/outposts of IA. That had to be claimed back. And the wise are the ones which turns a disaster into an opportunity. Our leaders though relatively quite inept made full use of the opportunity to paint pakistan in suitable light.

the 9/11 aftermath made that perspective quite permanent. Now pakistan is an international pariah. Nobody takes them seriously in diplomatic circles. Everyone deals them purely from a military angle !

The process of defense modernization which was toned down drastically during the 80s and 90s, was restarted !

I would say Kargil was a good thing to happen. It made the strategy circles awake to the challenges we face and prodded them to think long term !

Indian media reported that Point 5353, a strategically-important peak in the Dras sector, was still under Pakistan's control. After this, the Indian Army said that the peak had never held by India, and was not on its side of the LoC. Indian army however continued efforts for retaking it, till 2003 when a ceasefire agreement was signed between Pakistan and India. Pakistan consolidated its position on Point 5353 by constructing concrete bunkers and a road from Benazir Post, the base of the peak to Pakistan's rear headquarters at Gultari.

I know many indians will disagree or call me non patriotic and many will say this is already posted.

Kargil War was fought mainly to gain control over peak 5353 (Tiger hill).As this peak has a clear view of india's neck that is NH 1D .This highyway is strategic root betwwen siachen and LEh.As this peak is of very strategical imporatance India was unable to gain it back and pakistan can anytime have an upperhand on india by shelling or destroying this highway.This time there are solid bunkers and an iquipped Pakistan army.

There are many places from which NH 1A is dominated by Pakistan.

That is why a new route has been organised and work is going on it.

Simple.India is messing with China by playing along with US games.Second,India has exited Russian aegis that kept it safe from Chinese aggression.India is now on its own.

anyway all this aman ki tamasha aur MFN status are just lollipops to keep indias so called inteligensia and middle class bizzi with some talking subject the real aims are very different both for pakistani establishment and south block
