India helping Musharraf fight terrorist networks

* Meeting decides India needs ‘strong’ Pakistan
* Intelligence ‘assets’ ordered not to take advantage of instability in Pakistan

By Iftikhar Gilani

NEW DELHI: India has quietly geared up the intelligence operatives it has in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran to help President Pervez Musharraf fight terrorists.

According to a top intelligence source, this ‘practical’ step has been taken to aid the president in restoring peace and stability to Pakistan. The source said the decision to activate Indian ‘assets’ in support of the Pakistan regime was taken in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) held a day after Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in Rawalpindi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh chaired the meeting.

The meeting concluded that a “strong and stable Pakistan” was need of the hour for peace within India, and decided that President Musharraf was battling the same terrorist groups that have spread sleeper cells throughout Jammu and Kashmir and inside the Indian hinterland. It said the same groups are also behind the instability in Afghanistan.

Don’t take advantage: Subsequently, Indian ‘assets’ in and around Pakistan were ordered to lie low and not make things difficult for the Musharraf regime. They were directed not to take advantage of Pakistan’s current phase of instability and try to help wherever possible without jeopardising themselves.

The source said it was a good omen for the region that the nuclear rivals perceived terrorist groups, particularly the Taliban and other extremists, as common enemies, and were seeking their elimination as fast as possible. He said India has doubled its forces along its border with Pakistan to not only bar any spillover from Pakistan, but also to push back any terrorists that may try to escape the crackdown ordered by Musharraf after Benazir’s death.

However, the source said that even though India was working for peace and stability in Pakistan, there might still be some elements within the Pakistan Army and the establishment who wanted to aid the terrorist cause.

Meanwhile, security analysts here agree with the Indian government’s strategy to be friendly towards Musharraf while looking for a probable democratic settlement in Pakistan. They, however, advocate extreme vigilance and close watch over developments to quickly discern adverse implications on India. They say security expert Bharat Karnad was apt in dubbing Pakistan a “cushion for India against Islamic extremists”. They also want Pakistan to recognise that the menace of fundamentalism is a homegrown affair.

Dr Smruti Pattnaik, incharge of the Pakistan Desk at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis (IDSA), says Benazir’s death was a wake-up call. “It is time the Pakistani state reorients its policy to fight its own war on terror inside its territory,” she said.

As I have always stated, a stable and economically vibrant Pakistan is the best option for India and for sub continental peace and stability

Once they are safe and stable, don't they start their usual business?

No, I don't think that will be so.

The turmoil that has erupted in Pakistan because of the flawed and perverted religiosity of Zia, wherein he misused Islam to give him respectability for governance, inspite of being a military dictator, who had no hesitation to kill his mentor, who promoted him over his superiors, is enough of a shock. Zia was a selfish self centred man who had no gratitude for favours done. He was also a scared man wherein he was so afraid of Bhutto that he killed him!! Bigger crooks have been pardoned but Zia was running scared because he was illegitimate a ruler! He was afraid that Bhutto might turn the public opinion against him in the future and have him lynched to the nearest pole or tree! The man has ruined Pakistan, which otherwise was and is a country that has done well.

We are in India and so we do not understand the tribulations faced by Pakistan. The nation is wracked with successions, secession, Islamic fundamentalists running a riot and holding the common man and govt ransom, foreign powers dictating terms that are being agreed to etc etc.

No country, if it can get back on even keel and I am sure Pakistan will, will repeat this horror of Zia!!

I will, at the same time concede that there will be those who are blinded by religion and who will try to put a spanner in the works.

I am also sure that most Pakistanis are matured, sane and just want to get about with their lives like all others in the world!

I have hope!

I had typed a long reply to this thread but the site gave an error and I lost my post. I will summarise:

1. Zia ul Haq worst thing that ever happened to Pak. He had no need to encourage the birth of extermists within our own borders, his job was to inspire Afghanis.

2. Musharraf gave the media freedom and now he can shutdown channels but he can't shutup people. This means never again will people sit idly by as a military officer takes command. Never again shall an army officer rule Pakistan. Mushy's approval ratings are probably on par with GW's.

3. New generations of Pakistanis don't care about Indian occupied Kashmir. Both countries have realized the benifit of trade, and neither will do anything to jeoperdize their own economies. So we can be sure there will be no more conflicts for a good while.

I will say few things for you summarization.

1. Zia's war in Afghanistan was the only option for the survival of Pakistan at that time and was done in the Interest of Pakistan, if Russia was allowed to capture Afghanistan, Paksitan since it was not Nuclear Power at that time was in real danger. Extremism is a bi-product of lots of other things which is not only Zia's gift to pakistan.

2. Musharaf biggest mistake was to give media so much freedom because he didnot thought that the same Media will be bought up by the CIA and others and used against Pakistan.

3. You are some how correct as no one wants a war on Kashmir.

I didn't say he had a choice and that he shouldn't have initiated the Afghan resistance. I'm saying he should have been able to forsee the dangers to Pakistan itself from such mujahideen. What would they do in case of victory against the USSR? Obviously he didn't give a crap if Pakistan was turned into a theorocratic state ruled by self-righteous mullahs, since he himself was one, albeit an "educated" one.

He should have made sure the ISI didn't become an indepent faction which starts doing things on it's own without approval or instructions from a democratically elected NA/Senate.

2. Musharaf biggest mistake was to give media so much freedom because he didnot thought that the same Media will be bought up by the CIA and others and used against Pakistan.

The fact that he gave the media freedom is why Pakistan has started making progress. The more freedom a country's citizens have, the faster it progresses.

Asking for a democratic process, asking for the constitution to be respected and upheld is not an anti-Pakistan activity. Jinnah's vision of Pakistan was what the media is fighting for, but some educated people like you seem to be against them. I am confounded by this.

It also is very amusing how Pakistanis (Muslims in general) like to blame someone else for all their problems. Of course, the favorite target of abuse is the US, but I never see any proof or even rationale behind the claims. If anything, the CIA is doing it's best to help Pakistan become stable and secure.

3. You are some how correct as no one wants a war on Kashmir.

Yep, I can see the LoC eventually becoming the permanent international border.

According to this report, there are Indian "assets" in Pakistan. Assets must mean interference. That is an acknowledgement by India they've been doing some terrorist things in Pakistan previously.

The J&K quote is correct in the sense there is an Al Q element in all this, but then there is an Al Q element all over the world. Helping Musharraf rid the place of Al Q would be good, but that's about all the "elements have in common". Hizb are a Kashmiri group, just as Pakistani Taliban are a Pakistani group, just as Afghani Taliban are an Afghani group. Hizb is seeking justice for its people, Pakistani Taliban are unjustifiably giving some shield to foreigners, and Afghani Taliban are fighting the coalition in Afghanistan. Each have separate causes, one more justifiable than the other.

Might be a true report, might not be. Intelligence given the the public is rarely correct.

Good step. Hope it will be appreciated and reciprocated back in terms of helping India fight terror and also nab criminal scum like Dawood.

indian assests in Pakistan activated?

I did not know that Aishwariya/Raveena moved to Pakistan and charging Rs100for fun!!:taz:

It's a known fact that "Indian Assets" are all over Pakistan, Majority are in Balochistan, Sindh and now in Swat (via Chitral).
Now, India feels unsecure after the happenings in PK and thinks this can Roll into it's country. That is why there assets has once again been brought out so openly. It is yet again a Game Plan to the world.

Thank you, but then it is also in India's interest to have a strong and stable Pakistan if sub continental peace and stability is the key theme.

The days of yore is over.

It is the time for CBMs, initiated by Musharraf and Vajpayee and being carried on by Manmohan and Musharraf!

Is Rs 100 a big amount of money in Pakistan?

Does speak a lot of the low spending power and poor economic situation in Pakistan.
