Politics in India is still at the second world level: communalism, regionalism and casteism.
Nationalism, and therefore sports take a back seat ;) .

This is about 'metal's' ? London's biggest ... hehe ... metals company is Indian origin owned Arcelor-Mittal Steel.

I am not saying Bangalore or any other city of India is ahead or even closer of those dazzling cities Sydney or London, in-fact i agree to you those cities are way ahead of ours, but 15 years back I never even Imagined Indian cities could change it's landscape in such a short span of time...

India Set for Fibre Fever
India's INR 200 billion (US$3.5 billion) National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) plan, which is being funded by the country's Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), is set to create major opportunities for network builders and infrastructure vendors as the Government attempts to take broadband connectivity and digital communications services to the masses.

The network, designed to take fibre connections to the 840 million people who live in India's 250,000 Gram Panchayats (village administrations), will be rolled out and run by a "special purpose vehicle," namely Bharat Broadband Network Ltd. (BBNL). That company will act as an independent wholesaler selling network capacity to multiple service providers looking to reach rural India.

BBNL will lease long-haul, backbone dark fibre capacity from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) , Railtel Corporation of India Ltd. and Power Grid Corp., which already have more than 670,000 route kilometers of fibre running along their national optical transport backbone networks.

But to reach the 250,000 Gram Panchayats, about 500,000 kilometers of new fibre will have to be laid, running from multiple points of presence (POPs) along the transport backbones.

While some of the new connections will require point-to-point fibre connections from a PoP to a Gram Panchayat, most will be connected using GPON technology, whereby fibres will run from Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) housed at the PoPs to local splitting points, from where dedicated fibre lines will deliver up to 100 Mbit/s of downstream capacity to each Gram Panchayat.

As this is a Government initiative, various state-run organizations will be involved, including Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd. (TCIL) in a monitoring role and Centre for Development of Telematics (C-***) and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in support roles.

RailTel
RailTel has built “state of the art” backbone network using latest SDH & DWDM technology. Presently, 400 cities covering over 30,000 RKMs are connected on backbone network with STM-16 (2.5 Gbps) connectivity across the country. RailTel has also implemented ultra high capacity DWDM network over 10,000 RKM to provide 400 Gbps which is further up gradable to 800 Gbps in future.

Power Grid Corporation
Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd is the Central Transmission Utility of the Nation and has installed dedicated Optic Fibre communication Network.POWERGRID has installed about 25,000 Kms of Telecom Network (backbone as well as last mile) and connectivity has been provided to about 206 cities including all metros, major cities & towns mainly through the Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) laid on its power transmission lines.

Mukesh Ambani, often called the new king of Mumbai, the old king of Bombay being Tata, is also moving into aerospace. Tata, Mahindra have already established some lead by buying Global aerospace Co.'s; but Ambani run Reliance is like a cash machine with it's refinery businesses and have big bucks to throw around, an around $ 15 Billion cash pile for starters. They've filed to:

Re: above, personally I am against sinking so much money into a airport in the middle of a mega-city. Locks up real estate, causes pollution and residential/commercial safety hazards (imagine a major accident, South-East Asia-Delhi-Mumbai-Karachi-Dubai-Middle East is one the world's busiest corridors). Deadly & dangerous.

I am all for un-locking the real-estate at Santa Cruz, Bombay and building 1/2 dozen airports outside the megacity. Economic benefits are obvious.

:offtopic: I have become an even bigger fan of Pakistan's post Mushy free TV media rather then the elitist print media papers. Specially the truisms about Pakistani society and even more so, multi polar, confusing and often imbalanced Indian society. Current Pak TV media is the most honest, truthfull and transparent reporting on Afghanistan, Pakistan and specially India issues in my opinion.

Indian media, run by builders and politicians, is all about money, therefore sensationalism and nothing but. Free like ... hehe ... pornography in America.
