Wotabout MAN, Navstar, Tatra, Magna, Caparo, Chinkara Motors, Premier Auto is back, Atul Motors, San Motors, ICML, Cooper Engg., BEML and many more? I admit some are yahoo type, still .
Impressive, some 25 yrs. ago I read a series of 3-5 govt. type, dry & thick reports outlining how India went about building a systemic vehicle industry.
By the 80's a farm implements (small engines for farm work like pumping water, auto-rickshaws, small tractors), 2 wheelers and trucks making eco-system was put in. Layer-by-layer, govt. opened up the motorcycle and light truck game with the Japanese and some others. Last layer was small cars.
Inida now dominates in above categories and is the Global top 3 player in small 2 wheelers, small tractors, small trucks and farm implements like tools and pumps. Probably top 5 in medium to heavy trucks and buses too, not sure. India is even bigger in parts, forgings, sub assemblies and harnesses re: vehicles industry.
Surprising to see the govt. actually succeeding in enabling and setting up the whole vehicle industry game. Private sector also played its part.
The base is deep and wide, and it amplifies. 10 Million jobs overall, including ... hehe ... tyre-pencher-wallahs, mistry's and vehicles related call centers. Future is bright, upto 25 Million jobs scope.
Imagine an Indian vehicle turning a Global hit, an Enfield, a Reva electric, Tata Ace / Pixel, Bajaj Trax or something from Mahindra. Can happen.
Re: below buses, you don't have to be a genius to tell it's a real life scam. Bus services fall under municipal, or local politics. Local politicians are the pits. Simple.
Re: below highways, the before-&-after:
