Washington, Jan 3: India has marked its arrival in the world scene and has established itself as a force to reckon with. The arrival will be profound and firm as India will see itself gain a firm footing in the United Nations Security Council.

After clamouring hard for support among third world countries, India will gain its supreme position by becoming president of the powerful United Nations Security Council in August and again later next year, most likely in November 2012, during its two-year term as a non-permanent member. India has attained this position after a gap of 19 years. It will also play a key part in the campaign against terror. This will lead to India and its nerve centre New Delhi gaining a firm foot hold in the affairs of the world and its challenging security situation.

Ahead of India enjoying its powerful position in the Security Council on January 1, India has made its stand clear that the fight against terrorism will be top priority during its two-year term presiding over the 15 member body. The other permanent members of the UNSC pointed out that India more than being a victim of acts of terrorism have thwarted many attempts to counter them as well.

The nations have come to a consensus that New Delhi is best positioned to lead the counter terrorism initiatives for the next two years.

UAE to support India's UNSC bid

India's relations with the UAE touched a new high this year after the Emirates came out in strong support for New Delhi's quest for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. The pledge came during the maiden visit of President Pratibha Patil to the Emirates, home to 1.75 million Indians.
The visit came at a time when UAE has emerged as India's largest trading partner in terms of total trade exchange in the first half of 2010, with USD 43 billion bilateral trade, and oil imports by India accounting for USD five billion. Indian and UAE trade exchange has multiplied 13 times over the past 10 years with non oil sectors slowly gaining a predominant share.

President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan stated that UAE would certainly support India, which had the right to be a permanent member of a reformed UN Security Council.

The two sides also agreed on regional security as an area of enhanced cooperation and to address issues relating to counter terrorism and maritime security. India has invited UAE's Interior Minister to New Delhi for the signing an agreement on the issue.

India and the UAE agreed to enhance the strategic relationship by focusing on areas such as education, science and technology, regional security and many other areas where there is a potential for cooperation. India and the UAE politically share common perceptions on major international issues which became more evident during the visit of the President, said M K Lokesh, India's ambassador to the UAE.

During her visit, President Patil also launched a 24 hour helpline and counselling service dedicated to help Indian workers in distress in the UAE.

A striking display of India's growing soft power footprint in the Gulf region was the launch, on May 24 this year, of the international version of CBSE curriculum in Dubai. Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal had described the CBSE as an "internationally benchmarked curriculum" with 30 Indian schools in nine countries using it from the current academic year. The curriculum's global format is aimed at attracting schools catering to the large expatriate Indian population as well as non Indian students planning to pursue higher studies in India.

Meanwhile, the fate of 17 Indians sentenced to death for killing a Pakistani man in January, 2009 is to be decided by a Sharjah appeals court on December 30.

US Congress initiates Motion for India`s UNSC Permanent Seat

Washington, February 19, 2011 – IR Summary/zeenews.com - Describing India as a rising global power, a bi-partisan resolution has been initiated in the US House of Representatives expressing strong support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, which has been highly appreciated by God Believers Association (GBA), World Peace & Human Right Mission.

The resolution was introduced by Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings on Thursday, supported by half-a-dozen other lawmakers, which has now been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Appreciating India for being a strong democratic ally, key economic partner and rising global power, the resolution favors its inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist and Lead Man of God Believers Association (GBA), World Peace & Human Right Mission with several expanded social causes like correcting Global Climatic Disorders, said in New Delhi on Saturday that all Indians throughout the world shall feel satisfied with the US Policy towards India and particularly of President Barack Obama for honoring his word of true friendship that he vowed during his recent visit to India.

Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist, further said that the US has a broader principle of working with friendly and peace loving countries within the United Nations for the larger interest of the world, and its well being, and that’s what make the US as a real leader of peace in the world.

Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist, Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist, Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist, Dr. Raj Baldev, Cosmo Theorist. What the **** is a cosmo theorist and why is he the only one in the world who uses the title. Sounds like he just made it up.

Good for India though, the US Congress express of support is important.

India has to improve its human rights records in order to be even considered for the UNSC Seat. With the attrocities in Kashmir, massacers in Gujrat, killing of Christians in India and the mass grave of the Sikh Community...., this should be a closed topic.

Yet we still have a seat, funny how that works.

It is not the security council which is going to consider expansion of the security council but the General Assembly.:victory:

You really don't understand how a veto works do you? Unless they decide to take away China's veto or another p5 veto (dream on), the P5 still gets final say on UNSC expansion.

Yes but would China veto the proposal which would completely alienate India and push India further towards west. When the other four P5 countries accept the proposal but China rejects it wouldn't sit well with four of the major economies in the world. Lets see how all this plays out.

China wont veto India. It will lose more than it has to gain. China and India are not that much at odds as it is made out to be. In fact, both countries jointly bid for resources these days to prevent price wars etc. In fact, if anything China would want India in the UNSC to act as a bulwark in climate control, WTO, GM foods, and other related developed versus developing forces agenda. What China has to decide is whether they want to act alone and risk isolation or work with others to get more from the OPEC/Developed nations. In any case, to me orgs such as OPEC, WTO, NSG, etc are more important as these are the clubs that control resources. UNSC is really only to prevent wars and regional conflicts and cant be used to secure resources. I am sure China knows this and they will know what is in their interests. So, will India. It will all be an interesting power tussle. Bu I wont take any simplistic views like most Chinese members do here. Foreign policies are complicated positions with plenty of give and take. To me, China would lose if it ends up being that Germany and Japan has secured a position while India has not, because the already heavily tilted balance toward developed nations would tilt further toward us. Why would China want this? If anything China wouldnt want Germany or Japan in there but would want India in there to tilt the balance against us developed countries. Think about it. UNSC reform is not a China versus India issue, it is a developed versus developing issue. We in the USA know this but Chinese members are unable to comprehend this??? Why not??

The USA and Russia have used their vetoes a ridiculous number of times.

In fact the USA just recently vetoed another Israeli settlement resolution, defying all the other P5 members, YET again.

Who is going to punish them? No one. That is the beauty of the veto. :azn:

Do you realize that too many vetos and people will simply stop using the UNSC and start looking for alternate dispute redressal mechanisms? With power comes responsibility. I hope the US doesnt end up vetoing things that shouldnt be vetoed in the first place. Then every P5 nation can be lobbied to veto one thing or the other, and the whole thing would come crashing down like a house of cards. And that would sound the death bell for the UNSC as a capable body. A non-functioning body normally goes extinct.

But that made certain people very cross on US, if China alone vetoes India, that would also make India very cross on China. Now it's upto China if they want to alienate India further.

China has used veto power the LEAST, out of all the P5 members. Russia and USA have used it the most.

If the hammer comes down on excessive use of veto, it will come down on the USA or Russia. Not on us.
