India and Iran: Challenges and Opportunity

Even during sanction, India was one of the largest buyer of Iranian oil. US could not prevail upon India to stop buying oil from Iran during sanction. Still some of the sanctions are in place, but India is working around to put Iran - India relations on solid foot

India can work its own way through Iran nuke deal: US - Moneycontrol.com

And India is one of the main reasons why US is in pressure to lift sanctions.

India broke its own assurances. That demonstrates lack trustworthiness.

I refuse to lend $1000 to somebody I don't know. That demonstrates lack of trust.

What assurances did India give? As a blanket guarantee? What has Iran given India that it expects Indian sacrifices for?

. .
Think Japan, Germany, Britain, US.... These are highly ethical and moral nations. That's exactly why they are where they are.
Wow are you really Iranian? calling Britain and US ethical and moral have you forgotten how in 1953 Mohammad Mosaddegh govt was kicked out when he tried to nationalize your oil industry .

What is so hard about this to understand? India gave assurances to Iran that it won't vote against it, and then at 1 o'clock in the morning of the vote, it changed its mind. Do you now get it?

And again, you demonstrate my point by thinking that India must get something from Iran to hold its own word. For me that's the epitome of untrustworthiness. That's why I say Iran must be wary of dealing with India. All understandings are subject to be unilaterally abrogated by India, in case of a higher bidder.

Yes I'm Iranian. And moral and ethical does not imply good or bad. It simply means adherence to set of values and principles. And in that they're certainly moral and ethical.

I have no issues how wary you want to be, there is no win-lose system that will work. It will either be a win-win situation or nothing. The rest of your arguments is about the same, how you want something for nothing.

Btw, all references to India-Iran relationship here is only in the context of your arguments. I don't share the scepticism that you bring in.

There are few countries that can buy oil in such large quantities as India. The other being US and China.

As on deep pockets...people don't buy or invest in something for which they have no use. Iran knows that too. Hence Iran was the first to reach to India the day news of sanctions being lifted were announced. Iran offered India to invest in around $8 billion worth of projects.

As I said Iran is India's gateway to middle east and central Asia, hence would invest more and more in Iranian economy as the time passes.

Japan is ready to resume oil imports which she reduced drastically because of sanctions, South Korea and European countries are there as well, China will reverse the cut down in imports as well, and why you think that US will not import from Iran? And unlike other oil producing countries in the region, Iran has range of minerals other than oil & gas for export.

Surely, Iran offered India to invest just like it offered other countries for investment after all she will be open for business after removal of sanctions, but where $8b stands when Iran is aiming for $185b projects just in oil & gas sector?

Sure India can invest in Iran to reach Central Asia for business but she will be no longer in position to exploit any trouble in Iran-Pak relation which are improving because of realignment of Pak-Iran geopolitical interests.

So you want the Indian government to interfere with the sovereignty of Iran to prove that it is moral and ethical my Iranian friend ?

Exactly! In other words, if you want India to stick to its own word, you gotta keep paying it. Otherwise, if a higher bidder comes along, well they're up for sale.... I think you're unwittingly demonstrating the example of the word untrustworthy.

That's a mercenary attitude my friend. And that kind of mentality leads to a few thousand British soldiers taking over a huge country like India...

So you want the Indian government to interfere with the sovereignty of Iran to prove that it is moral and ethical my Iranian friend ?

How you concluded that from what I said, god only knows... And I'd prefer to keep it that way.

There is ample trust between India and Iran for Iran to offer India to invest in Chahabar . He is just trolling.
u mean Mr Zarif's visit?

He first visited Pakistan then after India.

This has nothing to do with either money or the higher bidder no matter how much that might suit your argument. This is about the basis for demanding special treatment, it is only reasonable that you outline what special behaviour have you shown towards India that makes your expectations justified.

As for issues between two countries, an attempt to assassinate an Israeli diplomat on Indian soil led in the direction of Iran. Some trustworthiness that.

US itself has lot of oil reserves and other sources, so that leaves the two other energy hungry large countries: China and India. Japan, South Korea and European countries don't have that much of demand that they can compete with India in buying oil. Moreover, India with its growing economy, the demand for oil from India is going to go up exponentially in future.

As on investments, It is up to the Iranians whom they want to invest in their country, but there is no doubt that India's investments in Iran will be huge and will be commensurate with India's growing economic power and its interests in middle east and central Asia.

You cannot divorce economics from geo-political interests, hence growing India - Iran relations will effect Iran - Pakistan relations. And India will be more than to happy to exploit that situation.
