India abstains from Saudi-sponsored resolution aimed at Iran

India and 39 other nations abstained from a UN resolution condemning an alleged Iranian plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to the United States, saying full facts were not known and the matter was sub-judice.

The resolution, which was introduced by Saudi Arabia, doesn't directly accuse Iran of involvement but calls on it "to comply with all of its obligations under international law" and to cooperate in "seeking to bring to justice" the people who allegedly plotted to kill the envoy.

The vote was 106 in favour, nine against and 40 abstentions.

India takes its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons Convention with utmost seriousness, India's Permanent Representative Hardeep Singh Puri said in an explanation of India's vote.

"However, we have abstained today on the resolution, as its substance deals with a specific case in which we are not in the possession of full facts and the matter is sub-judice," he said.

"India has been a victim of terrorism for decades," Puri said. "We condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and we have been in the forefront of global actions on counter-terrorism."

"Our tireless efforts as Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee, established under Security Council Resolution 1373, have resulted in the UN adopting a 'zero tolerance' approach towards terrorism. We urge all UN member-states to strive for the strict implementation of this approach," he said.

US officials in October accused Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old naturalised US citizen, and Gholam Shakuri, an Iran-based member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, of conspiring to hire hit men from a Mexican drug cartel to bomb a restaurant where the Saudi ambassador would have been.

Iranian Ambassador to the UN Mohammad Khazaee called it "mind boggling" that "an unsubstantiated claim of one member state with a long history of animosity against my country that my government has already and strongly rejected" served as a basis for the resolution.
led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) - would not stay with the central government and demanded a roll-back.

Because it is Shia vs Sunni!!! Look all Shia majority country acted in favor of Iran like Iraq or Azerbaijan or the neighbouring or regional friendly countries like Turkmenistan, Pakistan or India.

The Middle East Muslim world is far from united, and constantly fight amongst itself. Ethnically, the region is divided into Arabs, Turks, Kurds and Persians. All of these groups is quite distrustful of one another. On top of ethnic division, you also have the problem of religious division. While majority of Syrians are members of the Sunni, Syria is ruled by members of the Alawi sect, widely consider it a sub-group of Shi'ite. Also because of this connection, Syrian government is very friendly with Iran for an Arab state, but also disliked by other Sunni governments. It is also the reason why new Iraqi government is more distant to Saudi, UAE and Oman, because it is Shi'ite controlled.

If you look at how brutal the Sunni monarchy in Bahrain put down revolts by Shi'ite majority earlier this year, you'd know that these two groups absolutely despise each other. In fact, Bahrain has hired the CEO of Xe (Formerly Blackwater) to train a battalion of mercenaries, because they don't trust the army to keep their rule up. Because of these ethnic and religious divisions, Americans and Israelis are able to exploit them. The region will continue to be stepped on if they can't find a way to unite.

Pakistan did good by abstaining from the resolution because it was all bullshit , Y do Iran need to go thousand miles away just to kill an ambassedor.............................. It is all part of the tactics used by Americans to not let saudia or middle eastern country come near Iran coz if they do then it will be getting difficult to actually united Muslim countries coz they will have say how as they have money.

They will never want a united muslim union or sumthing................So plz stop BS America and Stop BS us UN (american puppy) for all this topi drama.
