What's new

In need of an Attack Helicopter

Currenly we are operating around 60+ Cobra helicopters. Roovialk still remains open to replace them despite the fact that the Turkish Army has moved on.

somebody mentioned we r operating 60 cobras. actually the actual info i have is that the PA is operating 19/20 original AH-1S cobras plus the DSCA web-site shows that 40 EDA cobras have been transferred to PA free of cost. PA pays for the upgrade. now here's the point. 20 of the 40 are being upgraded to AH-1z config (capable of using hellfires) (of which 8 have been recently delivered).12 to be delivered by end 2008. and the bal 20 have been sent directly to PA to be used as spares (just in case america decides to put sanctions on pakistan).

one more point. does anyone have info on a cobra crash landing at multan air-base. both pilots survived the crash?

Yes it did have a hard landing but pilots are ok and the heli is under repair expected to be fully recovered (source ISPR).

Regarding A129 mangusta I earlier posted here or somewhere else the need to do a package deal of attack and utility helicopters.

Should Mangusta be the option then we could also look at AW139 helicopters which were developed in relation to Mangusta from Agusta westland though I can't find commonality of engine components between the two.

Chinese WZ10 is a good choice:china:

but is still in development stage and china will only acquire a limited amount of them coz of its high cost and limited usage. in turn, WZ-9G would be a much better choice coz china has already put WZ-9G into mass production, like the mi-24 WZ-9G is a combination gunship and troop transport.

Just as a reference, Pakistani delegation is checking out Russian attack helicopters as well. Take a look:

In the above pic, no less than a Major General is taking pictures of the heli ;)

KA-50s are also there. So who knows, maybe there are Russian contenders as well.

Pakistan Army looking for next generation helicopter gunships
Tariq Iqbal | Aug 22, 2007, 10:17

Pakistani delegation has recently visited International Aviation and Space salon 'MAKS-2007' outside Moscow, which suggests that it might be interested in acquiring Russian next generation helicopter gunships.

Pakistani military officers were seen in 'MAKS-2007' salon checking out the new Mi-28 and the KA-52 helicopter gunships. It may very well supports that there are Russian contenders as well.

It is not known how many next generation helicopter gunships Pakistan is trying to acquire but the figure may well add up to 30 helicopter gunships.

Pakistan currently uses AH-1S and AH-1F Cobra helicopter gunships, which are primarily used on the War on Terror to strike on the militants on the western border with Afghanistan

It was earlier reported through Pakistan Defence News that Pakistani Ambassador Mustafa Kamal Qazi has issued a list to the Russian counterparts to acquire military weapons & reconnaissance aircrafts to combat terrorism.

"There is a need for aerial reconnaissance. That's why we have asked Russia for equipment, which could help us in combating with terrorists. This is aircraft and means of aerial reconnaissance," he was quoted.

After the delivery of the RD-93 engines, this probably would be the second military order from Russia if the equipment met the requirements of the Pakistan Armed Forces.

The Mil Mi-28 (NATO: Havoc) is a tandem two seat anti-armour attack helicopter with no intended secondary transport capability. It is a follow up of Mi-24 helicopter with extensive design changes. Russian Military currently has 28+ of these helicopter gunships in service.

The Kamov KA-52 "Alligator" (NATO: Hokum-B) helicopter gunship is two seated derivative of KA-50 helicopter gunship. It is multi role, all weather combat helicopter designed to support the ground troops and engage slow moving objects in the air.
