IK did not cancel KL Summit trip due to Saudi Arabia pressure, says Dr Mahatir

What would Pakistan get from that strategic alliance?
Can Pakistanis get jobs in Turkey like Saudi Arabia? And why you care so much about Turkey?
i m not against Saudi Arabia they can be part of this strategic alliance, but i dont like they bullying us like they have done on this occasion, heck even China do not interfere in our foreign affairs this much.

That is a selfish mind set. Indonesia and Turkey also dont get money by joining the club either. It is a sincere intention to start building an effective alliance among prominent Muslim nations and promote democratization in Muslim world. Saudi leadership credibility in the Muslim world is questioned after it support military dictatorship in Egypt and alienate Muslim Brotherhood in their region.

We dont know the tangible result yet but at least it is a good start. It can be just a conference without producing any commitment but initial plan is quite ambitious.

This was a graceful act of face saving on behalf of PMIK. The truth is - whatever the emergency, once the rumours started spreading he should have gone. Either he considers his government too incompetent to handle whatever needed to be handled, or he cowered under pressure.

Don't be surprised at selfish short sighted mindset of Pakistani's - it is a national trait now. Our businessmen will fulfil one order to international standard, secure a customer and then rip him off with low standard materials at the next order. They don't think about regularly repeat business, but of the quick buck. Top to bottom this disease has destroyed us, because we don't implement the deen in our lives, only pay lip service to it.

Bro, Any Indonesian representative there?

My blood boils, man...

PM's bad diplomacy

IN perhaps the umpteenth U-turn of his prime ministerial career, Imran Khan has decided not to attend the Kuala Lumpur summit hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

The pretext, provided by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to journalists yesterday, was that Saudi Arabia and the UAE had reservations about the meeting and Pakistan was playing a role in addressing them. However, he said, since these concerns could not be addressed within the time that was available, Pakistan was stepping back from the summit.

The concerns apparently revolved around two questions: first, would the summit divide the ummah; and second, was it an effort to create an organisation parallel to the OIC. He said Pakistan would continue its efforts to bridge these gaps.

That may be so, but the fact is that Pakistan has already painted itself into a corner and cut a sorry figure.

Prime Minister Khan’s urge to play the mediator may be a noble one but the course of action he has taken should have been thought out better. The divisions between blocs of Muslim countries are no secret and neither are those issues that are sources of disagreement.

If Mr Khan thought he could successfully manage a diplomatic tightrope act between Saudi Arabia and the UAE on one side and Malaysia and Turkey on the other, then he should have acted on a well-crafted plan that allowed for such diplomatic finesse. Yet he had jumped the gun at the UN General Assembly session in New York where he made plans with prime ministers Mahathir Mohamad and Recep Tayyip Erdogan for joint collaborations in various fields including launching a channel together.

Why were the ramifications of these diplomatic initiatives not considered then? Why were the reactions of countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE not factored into this policy? Why did Mr Khan accept the invitation to attend the Malaysian summit before understanding how this would be perceived by the leadership of the Gulf countries?

As a result of its amateurish diplomatic manoeuvres, Pakistan has placed itself between a rock and a hard place. It has in the process alienated both sides without gaining anything in return except a red face. This despite the personal investment that Mr Khan had made in reaching out to the leaderships of these countries.

Pakistan should learn the right diplomatic lessons from this debacle.

We may harbour noble intentions about playing a role as mediator in various conflicts but, as this foreign policy faux pas has shown, greater thinking is needed about the costs and benefits of such ambitious adventures.

It will now take some delicate diplomacy to smooth ruffled feathers and mend fences that were needlessly fractured.

It may also be an opportune time for the Prime Minister’s Office to start relying more on advice from professionals in the Foreign Office and less on whims and fancies.

I think the effort can have better result if it is made after 2025 where Pakistan economy is getting better and dont need Saudi and Chinese loan anymore so more independent foreign policy can be conducted and also with possible Indonesia political power that is close with political Islam group can win 2024 presidential election. Last election this group can have 45 % vote.

Currently Indonesia is under Jokowi who is a nationalist politician so not very surprised if he doesnt attend the conference although still send his foreign affair minister to represent Indonesia. Saudi and UAE investment pledge IMO also hampering his will to attend. Previously our vice president that should have attended the conference, but just Today suddenly his doctor prohibit him to go to Malaysia over health issue.

According to Vice President spoke person to the media, it is foreign affair minister that will attend the meeting. Previously it should have been our Vice President who happen to be a prominent Ulama as well so better insight about Islam should have been the reason of his attendance. I think this changing due to the news about Saudi resentment over this conference. FM maybe is sent since she knows better about international politics so will make better decision on this sensitive meeting.

Why would Pakistan have to make a choice?

Do you well aware what you're arguing about?

Who forcing you about to be on one side?

I'm sorry, but some of what's written here is nothing but nonsense.

The attack on "Pakistan's will" has nothing to do with Turkey.

IK selected least bad option and he should not be pilloried for that. Saudi Arabia is lifeline for Pakistani economy and no ruler can be indifferent to their dictates. As simple as that.

And who says that this summit goal is against KSA; and says Malayisa-Turkey(-Pakistan trio) initative is separate block?

Since when has the state of Pakistan become a country that acts with the hysteria of the MBS or his mentor MBZ?
