India's Minister of Defence A.K. Antony today told Parliament that the $2.4-billion contract to upgrade 51 IAF Mirage 2000 fighters (signed on July 29) will take 10 years to complete. Which means, by July 2021.

Yeah it may take 10 years even more as India is on a really very big shopping spree as a single MMRC (Multirole fighter aricraft deal) alone is costing US $ 10.5 Billion. So that's hell lot of money, in fact that's the 1/4th annual budget of Burkina Fasso ( a country in africa with more than 5 million inhabitants) on top of that there's 5th generation fighter deal with Russian , again for a very hefty sum of US $ 25 Billion, on top of that aircraft carriers being made one at Cochin Dock yard & one old carrier being retro-fitted to be used of another 15-20 years at a cost of more than USD 750 Million, as that includes SU -29 BK to be posted in the aircraft carrier.
So as u can see all of the above BIG purchases will take time for delivery with a shelf life of more than 25 years on an average on the cards.

Mirages getting upgrades in 2020 should continue to fly atleast till 2035 or 2040.

I now think this upgrade deal was really not needed. The MMRCA should have added or alternately, more Su-30's should have been procured.

10 years is too long a time for upgrading those 50 mirages which we have in the inventory. By the time this up-gradation is finished the whole scenario in south asia might be completely different. India might have AMCA with few sqdns of FGFA and China may have a 5th gen fighter as well. I dont think even with the up-gradations, mirages will be able to stand the heat of J20s or some upgraded F16 block 80s(possible) in the subcontinent.

Total wastage of tax payer money... 79 million dollar per ac-- nonsense. Could have purchased the brand new aircrafts.

i must appreciate pakistan approach in this case... with the limited budget they are doing fine but here our IAF is spending money for sh!t.

Yeah! This is what happens when you are flush with money! There's plenty to be had as kickbacks from such contracts - most of it going into the Congress coffers and the rest......well, nuff said!

couple of things :

when they say 10 years, it does not mean nothing will be upgraded till then. These upgrades are in batches
and when they say lifespan of an aircraft is 20-25 years , thats from " upgrade date" and not 25 years from date of signing of contract.

The real question is will this upgrade prevent the aircrafts from becoming obsolescent for at least 20 years after upgrade ?
I suppose this upgrade was cleared by the MoD because IAF is very experienced with the Mirage, and in war experience matters as much as capability.

By seeing this i must say PAF's F-16 upgrade is much more speedy than this, also keeping the fact in mind that PAF f-16s has to go 2 kind of upgrades one that is Mid life upgrade (MLU) and the 2nd is Falcon structure upgrade , all the f-16's will be done ~around 2015

are you alright??,,,a few squadrons of FGFA and AMCA???,,,,J-20 aint gonna be ready until that!,,,AMCA is still paper project., it's first flight is gonna be 2017 and induction 2020, so you cant have good numbers by then!

This may be because PAF is more professional than IAF.

PAF is doing a good job with limited resources they have on the other hand IAF is operating in a very unprofessional way, wasting taxpayer money on the crappy ACs

its really long time ,, 10 year are enough to induct more than 200 aircraft .... now just 10 year to upgrade them .. its very long time even work done in batches giving only 6 jet will be upgraded in a year and what of tech will be obsolete in 2020 cause every fighter will be upgraded to same level so fighter coming out at end of 2020 will be already obsolete

actually IAF doctrine of having capability centric force rather than adversary centric force is totally flawed.

The war would always be relative. By 2020 china will start inducting J20 for which this vintage ACs are no match. we all know the manufacturing capabilities of chinese. they will produce 50 ACs per year once they will clear the FOC on the other hand we are only doing upgrades of this aircrafts at a snail pace.

Very unprofessional I must say.
