IAC 2 Update

Of course there is no free lunch. We can only look at cost/benefit of each alternative from our perspective.
Indeed and I'm sure the IN has done this done so meticulously and thus, if they propose a 65,000 ton EMALS-equipped nuclear powered carrier then we should be satisfied with their decision.

@Topic, whatever the design of the IAC-2 it should be (and likely will be) adopted as the standard IN carrier design and 2-3 more pumped out in this class before moving on to the next iteration. As it stands, by 2025/6 the IN will have 3 ACCs in service all of different designs/classes and obviously this is a sub-optimal solution from a training ,maintenance and logistics perspective.

Aircraft carriers last for 4 to 5 decades hence EMAL is better option than steam catobar in a long run . If we want another carrier quickly it should be vikrant 2. As the shipyard is capable to make another carrier in 4 to 5 years only

Yup i agree with you about it.. but life time operating cost will be lesser than conventional carriers...

Not true , it's the opposite ............ copy pasting a post by @Didact

G.A.O. is the US version of the Indian C.A.G. (all numbers below are in millions)

This is the reason I had suggested on another forum that India go for a larger CV than go for a CVN at this juncture, if cost-effectiveness had to be maximized.

If you want to focus exclusively on life cycle costs, the following table will give you an idea.

Any details on what the scope or area of assistance might be?
I won't hesitate to say it is more of a American project.

35 fixed wing aircraft only?
Most probably Navy will include AEW in the picture, which should reduce the required helo numbers.
IAC 2 might be bigger than expected if navy wants to operate 35 heavy fighters + AEW's + helos.

Should it also be able to fly? :P :D
If Army would have issued RFP for this then definitely they would have asked for it.

In India's case, A carrier may serve for 55-60 Years, Going through 3 major refits

well it certainly is looking so.
its too early to comment as to what US might offer, but with talks of F 35C, E2D, EMALS etc, a lot of US stuff might eventually be on the ship.
& i don't think its a bad move to keep focus on aircrafts that will be on the flight deck of AC and design a ship around it. Most of what is speculated to be offered to India is really cutting edge and if one takes into account IN's plan of having 5 CBGs, we are talking of atleast 3 Vishal class (or heavier) ships (i'm guessing something in tune of 75,000-80,000 Tons displacement).
With US's expertise in building such ships, i suppose its a right move anyway.

bang on target sirji + if USA helps in designing and manufacturing of these new breed of neuclears ACs in india then be sure that each one of them will have naval F35 & latest version of fixed winged US AWACS on them

won't there be a risk of US sanctions when ever India decided to go independent in its foreign policy specially with regards to china with whom despite border issues we have strong economic relations

The ship is already designed by NDB. Rest is consultation only. In case you wanna know EADS or Russians are helping us in aviation blocks for Vikrant. Its that sort of arrangement.

well thing is USA needs India to be used as couter wirght to china and as a catylst between US relations with Iran so that wont be such an issue but its too earli to say that but we already have P8I , C7 among many others

Yes we have started importing crucial defense items from US now but it still is a dicey game which only time will reveal

I agree, very important aspect we tend to bury under nuclear or conventional AC's debate here.
Quality and Quantity of fighters in the sea determines how effective a cbg will be.

Dada, i guess we are now too far into this and considering US has become largest arms supplier to India, policy makers obviously have factored in any possibility of Policy reversal or worse sanctions. A lot of critical armament is already sourced from US and i can't see this trend reversing. after watershed 123 nuclear agreement, US congress now takes into cognizance of fact that there is no point in having a policy of denial to India, that unfortunately (for US) has borne little or no results. We will see more and more critical technologies being transferred to India not only in defence but also in energy, manufacturing and transportation sector.

well all this high end technology is always welcome and yes there are compulsion on both sides to engage strategically but US past history is already encouraging but lets hope for the best. Meanwhile India must also not piss off Russia beyond point of no return
