In Pakistan and Afghanistan, the US got their hands busy dealing with Soviet back-up gurreilla fighters and now terrorists. Also unlike the two countries, VN has a North to South coast which made land combat in VN can have naval support at any times (yes, I count aircraft from carriers as part of the naval support, not the airforce). Also transportation of troops and supply is always easier via sea, instead of land.

Look at NK now and you still say China got nothing from helping NK? NK is dependent on China regarding food, fuel, energy, heavy industry technology and machine. Beijing makes one decision, millions of NKoreans get into troubles. Not to mention any conferences regarding NK nuclear program or the unity program of NK, China is always there to join. I remember one time China agreed with US to cut down NK nuclear program, NK answered by a nuke test. Next year, China cut down its food supply to NK, NK carried out a second test and demanded SK and US food. NK has little friends beside China (yes, VN used to be NK friend, but NK refused to pay for our $500 millions rice shipment, then the relationship got sour), and now even NK starts doubting China too. I believe there is a Chinese saying "There is no free lunch in this world". Don't you believe in it?

For the Soviet, that might be simply because VN belonged to the Communist block. For China, a buffer zone was important, especially when ICBMs still hadn't become the standard strategic weapons (if I am not wrong ICBM first showed its power during 1957). The only way for China to feel safe was hundreds of kilometers of buffer zone between China and potential enemies, namely the Capitalist block.

NK might not be so important to China right now, so they are trying to find new support from Russia. NK is also more open to former enemies like SK and the West too, despite thousands of Chinese troops sacrificed for them during the Korean war. Haven't Chinese media started branding NK the traitor yet? I have seen some, from Chinese Internet, if you ask me.

Yep, China shocked VN and the whole region with the 9 lines claim, then shocked the world with the rig 981 rig escorted by warships and fighters/helicopters. One thing Chinese mems here never accept is that the whole tension was started by China, not everyone else. If China had gone with the peaceful diplomatic way, things wouldn't have gotten so hot. China might even get somethings back, or at least maintain the situation (occuppying the islands without the majority of VNese knowing).

Ah, it might not be common knowledge for you guys but I gotta admit our govt attempt to hide that fact China occupy Paracels for a while. The history textbook for highschool has only one or two lines regarding the liberation of Paracel/Spartly from SVN force (which I believe is fake history anyway). The weather broadscast keeps reporting weather news of the region like it is our controlled territory (with people living and working in the area). Also incidents like the Johnson Reef Skirmish or the border skirmishes going on in the 1980s never got publicly mentioned. I believe it was to maintain the relationship and people's attitude towards China (VN needs China, VN is dependent on China in many aspects, that's a fact). But after 2009, they stopped the censorships and many things got dug up from the ground. So VNese attitude towards China keeps going downhill. There you have it, is that clear?

We always learn from mistakes in the past. Our fore father told us that expanding to the South & West is the key to help VN to stand firmly. So, we dont care when US sprayed Agent orange, we dont care when China attacked our North border & capture some of our rocks in SCS(east sea). We will keep expanding to the South & West, and it seems like China alone is powerless to stop us now

We will think to take back ur Guangdong-Guangxi again after we unify sub-Mekong region, dont forget to run away as fast as u can when we attack u like during Song dynasty

Right, we should know what is our goals and try to achieve all of them. We could attack to China like what we did to their Guangdong province during China Song dynasty 1,000 year ago , but we would gain Nothing. We'd better to keep expanding to the South and West to get bigger and stronger like what we've been doing for thousand years.
