Iran will close the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway vital for global oil shipments, if the country is prevented from using it, a senior military official said on Monday in what appears to be a response to the U.S. plan to end waivers on Iranian oil exports.


“If we are prevented from using it, we will close it,” the state-run Fars news agency reported, citing Alireza Tangsiri, head of the Revolutionary Guard Corps navy force. “In the event of any threats, we will not have the slightest hesitation to protect and defend Iran’s waterway.”

Iranian officials have threatened to close the waterway in the past amid rising tension with the U.S. and Tangsiri’s remarks could be an attempt to deter the U.S. from its plan to slash the nation’s oil exports. The price of Brent crude, already at a six-month high, was little changed after the statement.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway carrying a fifth of the world’s traded oil that Iranian officials have threatened to block in retaliation for sanctions targeting the country’s nuclear program. The U.S. has said it would move to stop any Iranian attempt to block the waterway.

But if oil exports reach 0, what do we have to lose? We can wait until next US election, but if Trump gets re-elected. Without oil, I don't think we can make it for 4 more years

The way I see it, we have 4 options.

1. Do nothing, lose our lifeline but continue to support Assad, Hezbollah while Iranians at home are starving with 0 income. Risk a new revolution.

2. Stop supporting Assad and Hezbollah. Watch Israel destroy Hezbollah, we lose our leverage, and will most likely get bombed by US.

3. Hope for Trump to lose next election and that the new elected president will normalize ties with Iran.

4. Block the strait

As a response to these harsh sanctions---it is time to destabilize Bahrain and Eastern province of Saudi Arabia populated by the Shias---oil price will go up and Americans will blame Trump and he will lose elections in 2020.

Iran should do something with the oil market and the region ---to punish Trump before elections----to show to americans that Trump's policy against Iran is a mistake and democrat Obama was better.

It's really funny to see just how badly Trump's North Korea adventure panned out due to Bolton's brash idiocy in wanting too much from North Korea too quickly. Granted the whole shallow escapade was cringe-worthy at best and sad all around. America's entire North Korea strategy is just draconian, cruel and dumb. Sure the nation has a shit government but who in the hell are we to dictate terms? Not to mention US sanction are designed to make the PEOPLE'S lives shitty not the governments...

Iran will be fine for a little while longer but the mere threat of closing the straight can achieve desired results since no shipment company will want to send their tankers through a zone that is being constantly watched over by Iranian missile of various makes. Gambit has the overwhelming tendency to blow US capabilities and military bravado out of proportion although I don't think he is necessarily wrong (he's view points and technology knowledge is awesome).

Sad....We're losing our nations here in the continental United States but out politicians are more than READY to start another conflict lol. Can't wait to see the shit-show that will be the 2020 elections.
