Is the average American even aware just how much it costs them as taxpayers to support Israel?
You also need to add in the money that the US gives to Egypt and Jordan every year as their rewards for making peace with Israel.
Most Palestinians and Arab countries have accepted that Israel is here to stay and a deal is there to be made if Israel would retreat back to the 1967 lines with some mutually agreed adjustments, but full US support for Israel is making that impossible.
The irony is US economic, military and political support for Israel is not in fact making Israel safer but more insecure in the medium to long term over the course of this century and beyond.
They need to make themselves "normal" in the region and the best way to do that is to take risks and retreat back to the 1967 lines, with obvious understandings on security like no stationing of foreign troops on West Bank etc.
I think with the way things are going and the demographic changes in US and the changing geopolitical situation as regards the rise of China then Israel could end up finding itself by mid-century as a fortress state and somewhat isolated little country in a sea of hostile neighbours(remember the Arab populations do not really like the peace made with them even if the rulers do). That is no way to live as a nation state.
