I wonder how 'Hindu' allowed a opinion piece like this. The author is clearly deluded, case in point whole narrative misses SCO which most probably will be the most influential body in Afghanistan after departure of NATO forces (and in Asia). Regional alliances are out of question when most of SA is critical of India's hegemonic designs.

India can attach some economic incentives to the deal but then it lacks such an economic clout at the moment, and its unlikely to catch upto China in this decade.

Ok enough of this BS.

India already has some sort of understanding with Nepal & Bhutan where an attack on any of the two will mean an attack on India. Indian forces enter there territories literally at WILL.

Apart from these two, India is the regional power that can intervene militarily in it's SA neighborhood when the situation demands.

It was India that helped Maldives when the govt. was overthrown in a coup of 1988.

It was India that interfered in SL when the war with LTTE was going out of control.

It was b'coz of India that BD is a free nation now.

India was the first country with which Afghanistan signed a security treaty, even before it signed the same with US. US is asking India (not Pakistan) to have a military presence in Afghanistan post-2014.

It was b'coz of the effective steps taken by Indian Navy in 2004 that the Tsunami relief operations went smoothly around the neighboring countries, for this IN was praised by countries world over.

If one goes just few years back in the 2006 Israeli-Lebenon war, where IN was entrusted with not just evacuating the Indians present in war torn Lebanon but also Nepalis, Sri Lankans, Maldivians etc (since no SA country apart from India had a navy that could send there navies for an out of area role).

US itself says that in the IOR, IN is the NET security provider.

Believe it or not, but NO country in SA is in position to use it's military (if they have one) as effectively as India can both in Peace & in War.

What the author is saying, that India should have a FORMAL security arrangement with it's neighbors on the lines of CSTO, this can include - Nepal, Bhutan, SL, Maldives, BD maybe Afghanistan (only problem is no direct land connection), India is big enough a power to Force these nations to sign on the dotted line. Of course, Pakistan will not join this, in fact for it's own interests India will not want it anyways.

I don't think so, remember what happened when we left South Vietnam the NVA stormed saigon like a cakewalk. Once we and everyone else leave Afghanistan a power struggle will ensue between the weak civilian gov't the military and the countless number of islamist groups/thugs, in it's current form the Afghan gov't is to corrupt and disorganized to function properly in order to remain a stable state. Afghanistan will be at war for many years to come.

Agreed that post NATO Afghanistan will be a mess but from an SCO perspective Afghanistan is vital (Central Asia) and the group they back will have an edge on other groups/ warlords (but you never know..).

I would like to hear your opinion on Taliban. Some have opined that USA might be trying to come to an understanding with them to counter SCO influence in near future and in CA (many militant operating there too, which will likely join Taliban). Any merit to these rumors?
