TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Araqchi reiterated Iran's sovereignty over the three Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb and the Lesser Tunb, and cautioned the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) to avoid interventionist policies with regard to Iran's affairs.
The PGCC's secretariat in its annual report released on May 19 repeated its claims against Iran's sovereignty over the three Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb and the Lesser Tunb in the Persian Gulf.
"Repetition of interventionist positions on the Islamic Republic of Iran's ownership and sovereignty over Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb and the Lesser Tunb islands will not leave any effect on the existing legal and historical realities," Araqchi said on Sunday, and added, "The trio islands are indispensible parts of Iran's territory and all the measures taken on the said islands fall within the framework of the Islamic Republic of Iran's sovereign rights."
Araqchi pointed to the PGCC's May report, and said, "This report very clearly explains why the PGCC is desperate in realizing the surrounding realities after 32 years of failed policies vis-à-vis important regional and international issues and is still being influenced by negative and unconstructive policies despite the benevolent calls made by the Islamic Republic of Iran and (even) some of the members of this council."
"It is regrettable that the PGCC in its report has made allegations about Iran-Group 5+1 nuclear talks which on one hand show the uninformedness and on the other indicate the ill intentions of some of the members of the council towards the peaceful settlement of important regional and international issues," he added.
Araqchi further underlined that Iran expects other states to avoid interventionist policies because it pursues the same line of action in its ties and interactions with the outside world.
"Non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, specially the neighboring states, pursuing the policy of mutual respect is among the constant and stable principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran's foreign policy," he said.
Iranian officials have on many occasions rejected the claims raised by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the three Iranian islands, underlining that such statements are baseless and unfounded.
International documents clearly show that the three islands of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa which were historically owned by Iran, temporarily fell to British control in 1903. The islands were returned to Iran based on an agreement in 1971 before the UAE was born.
Iran has repeatedly declared that its ownership of the three islands is unquestionable.
Under international law, no state can defy any agreement, which came into being before its establishment.
Yet, the UAE continues to make territorial claims against the Islamic Republic despite historical evidence and international regulations.
