It is a Make In India initiative with some bite. The lean and lanky indigenous Mudhol breed of hunting hound is all set to be drafted by the defence forces for guard duty by the end of the year.

The Mudhols currently training at Meerut will go to operational areas like Jammu and Kashmir for validation and testing. With satisfactory ratings, they are expected to be drafted by the Army.

Are u sure about this?? I mean this isn't the first time the army used indigenous breed of dogs .army previously used bakharwal dogs to catch terrorists in Kashmir and Himalayan sheepdogs have been used previously in foreward posts to catch infiltrators

Another stupid Indian idea like the multiple calibre assault rifle promoted by DRDO. These dogs are from the tropics how long do you think they will survive in the cold of Kashmir?

@Panzerfaust 3 Bakharwal dogs have been used by a couple of outposts in the valley but have never been used or inducted officially into the armed forces. The Mudhol hound is very similar to the Afghan & Grey hound and is one of the fastest and most agile dog breeds in the world. Recent tests have suggested that they are very much trainable on military lines which is why IA and other paramilitary units are planning to induct them

The Mudhol hound was introduced to the Deccan Plateau of western India from Central Asia and Arabia and is known to be a direct descendant of Saluki or Tazi and hence they can easily acclimate to cold weather on the lines of other hound breeds

Yes they are and 800,000 of them have been deployed in IOJ&K.
Yeah we need these dogs to ward off the pigs who stray into our fields
