Chinese action star Jackie Chan will star in the first Sino-India joint film production slated to go on the floors in the coming months.
This will be the first co-production film venture between the two countries under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on audio-visual cooperation signed during President Xi Jinping’s India visit in September.
The September MoU was signed to “pool their creative, artistic, technical, financial and marketing resources to co-produce films. It would help Indian audio-visual products to gain greater market access,” an official statement said after the signing.
Tentatively titled, Kungfu Yoga, the action-comedy joint venture film will be directed by Chinese director, Stanley Tong, who had earlier directed the 2005 movie, The Myth.
A fantasy adventure film, The Myth was partly shot in Hampi in India and starred Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat as an Indian princess besides Jackie Chan as the principle protagonist.
Tong has also directed Jackie Chan in the Hollywood movie, Rumble in the Bronx.
The names of the Indian stars for the movie will be announced soon, it was learnt.
The joint venture was launched on Tuesday in the city of Xian in central China during the ongoing Xian Silk Road International Film Festival.
A number of Indian films are being shown at the festival including Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Queen and Dil Chahta Hai.
Viacom 18 Motion Pictures from India and Taihe Entertainment from China will handle the co-production of Kungfu Yoga.
The head of Viacom’s revenue and international business, Gayatri Gulati, was in Xian to sign the letter of intent.
“This movie is the first joint production to be launched after the signing of the MoU. Many more are likely to follow,” Namgya Khampa, Counsellor (Trade, Commerce and Economic), at the Indian embassy in Beijing told HT.
Khampa added that there was a lot of interest among the Chinese stakeholders to get the project running.
More details about the film will be announced during the International Film Festival in Goa next month where China will be the ‘country of honour’.
Famous Chinese film director Wong Kar-wai and internationally known Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi are expected to attend the film festival in Goa.
A delegation from China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) – the country’s apex body for public broadcast -- will also head to Goa for the festival.
