First 'Made in Bangladesh' Smartphone Primo E8i by Walton hits the market

Bangladesh first cell service started in 1989 in Dhaka with AMPS analog technology. Expansion of connected cell towers nationwide were eased by cell companies (especially GrameenPhone) leasing a Railway Fibre-Optic link setup in 1985- run between all railway junctions. Bandwidth for that time was unlimited because there was no data traffic to speak of. The first generation AMPS cellphones (as opposed to radio-enabled car-installed phones used in Bangladesh prior to this) was the Motorola Dynatac,

Later the Startac was popular locally, starting in the mid 90's,

Bangladesh Telecom Limited (BTL) was awarded a license in 1989 to operate cellular, paging, and other wireless communication networks.

Then in 1990 Hutchison Bangladesh Telecom Limited (HBTL) was incorporated in Bangladesh as a joint venture between BTL and Hutchison Telecommunications (Singapore). HBTL began commercial operation in Dhaka using the AMPS mobile technology in 1993 and became the 2nd cellular operator in South Asia - closely following after Sri Lanka's Celltell (which used older technology called TACS), established in 1989.

Later that year Pacific Motors bought 50% of BTL. By 1996 HBTL was renamed as Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited (PBTL) and launched the brand name 'Citycell Digital' to market its cellular products.

Right now Citycell is the smallest of all Mobile phone service providers in Bangladesh.

The same with Television transmission, Pakistan (East and West) started way before India. From Wiki,

Ministry of Information to continue with the NEC joint venture collaboration to launch Pakistan Television or PTV. The project began with a tent on the back lot of Radio Pakistan Lahore where a transmission tower and a studio were constructed. On November 26, 1964 the first official television station commenced transmission broadcasts from LAHORE,[1] followed by Dhaka in 1965 (then the capital of East Pakistan). A third centre was established in Rawalpindi-Islamabad in 1965 and the fourth in Karachi in 1966. Later centres in Peshawar and Quetta were established by 1974. Originally broadcast in black and white, PTV began colour transmission in 1976.

B/W TV transmission started in 25 December 1964 (four hours a day) in East Pakistan. Indians started B/W test transmission in 1965 in Delhi (experimental local broadcast). Mumbai and Amritsar was not added until 1972.

After 1971 - Bangladesh started test Colour TV transmissions around 1979 before going full broadcast in first quarter 1980. India did not get colour TV on test basis until about 1982.

For those questioning Walton as a purveyor of inexpensive phones (@KapitaanAli)- here is their ZX3 model, retailing for about Tk. 34,000/-. This is very popular locally.

Walton Group Founder SM Nazrul Islam passes away

Walton Mobile Phone Production Plant is currently operating and assembling handsets in six units, with each of them capable of producing 4,000 phones every day.

The plant has been set up under the banner of Walton Digi-Tech Industries Limited on about 50,000 square feet of land, with an initial annual production capacity of up to 30 lakh handsets.

The company, which has been marketing and selling smartphones imported from China, assembles six types of handsets for now.

“Since its inception, Walton dreamt to provide people in Bangladesh with quality handsets assembled here at a reasonable price. Now it’s a reality, not a dream any more,” SM Rejoan Alam, a senior operative director who heads the Walton Mobile Handset, told the Dhaka Tribune.

You are absolutely right Rishav. Sahi Bataya aap. This is a story we just made up. We actually don't even assemble it locally like India because we lack the smarts to turn screws. It is made in china and we have them stamp our name on it and have them ship it to us. :-)

Bangladeshi bhais - please don't post videos or pictures of Walton's facilities because it does not exist.

It's all a myth.

? as we pointed out it is assembly unlike the bdeshish here who were boasting as if the phone is actually "manufactured" in bangladesh

. .
What components of this phone is being manufactured in Bongladesh? Screen? Battery? Ram Modules?

A random buzz in as usual, don't find the time to login this days
but here goes anyways,

Walton has some smt assembly lines, the news of which are not available
in news portals so most of it are heresays in the engineering circles.
A team from Walton (EEE) went to Finland some years ago under client Training
programs for the execution of eight complete SMT lines.

They have started manufacturing the core pcb motherboards in other
words a complete smd motherboard without the core processors
and similar ram modules. They have their own manufactured interfacing
chips , not sure if it's patented or license produced.

Their smt production line has been installed by Aspocomp a finnish company
and the production networking system by DG Tech Industries Ltd.
They are currently working on lcd panel production lines .

Try to spell the name of a country correctly by the way,
education is pretty cheap this days. Even the Rohingyas are getting
free education, you can apply for free too, I guess.

Best Regards
