An invitation to Narendra Modi to release martyr Bhagat Singh's jail notebook, extended by a kin, has irked scholars and the family of the martyr.

In May this year, Gurgaon-based Yadvinder Singh Sandhu, grandson of Bhagat Singh's younger brother Kulbir Singh, announced at a press conference in Chandigarh that the jail notebook of Bhagat Singh, which is in the possession of Kulbir Singh's family, will be available in the form of a glitzy coffee-table book format.

Now, the book is ready for circulation and an invitation has been extended to Modi to release it. Confirming the development, Yadwinder Singh said they had requested Modi to release the book. "We have sent him two to three dates and will get the final schedule soon. The book will be released at a function at Talkatora Stadium in Delhi," he said.

However, the invitation has irked the other family members of Bhagat Singh as well as the scholars who have written about Bhagat Singh.

Prof Jagmohan Singh, a Ludhiana-based nephew of Bhagat Singh, has initiated a campaign against the move with a letter appearing in the latest issue of the weekly Mainstream. He said Modi should not be invited for the purpose as Bhagat Singh and his comrades were firmly opposed to communalism and communal violence.

He said that in the present context it was important that the literature belonging to Bhagat Singh should be released only by a person whose life is in conformity with the values and principles for which Bhagat Singh lived and died. "Clearly, Modi does not qualify for the role," he said.

Lashing out at Yadvinder Singh, he said the diary is already a public document, the need for its release does not arise and the entire exercise appears to be guided by a selfish motive.

Not just the martyr's kin, the move has irked a section of scholars and historians also.

Chaman Lal, former professor of Indian Languages at Delhi's JNU and an expert who has edited and penned several books on him, said in a letter to other scholars that the invitation to Modi to release a book on Bhagat Singh is like "Hitler being invited to release Lenin's book" or "Bush being invited to release Che Guevara's book". "The family member is trying to hog limelight by this irresponsible move; none of the other members of Bhagat Singh's family approves it," he said.

Shamsul Islam, associate professor, department of political science, Satyawati College, University of Delhi, opposed it saying it was "a second hanging of Bhagat Singh" in a letter that appeared on the website Counter Currents. "I strongly feel that no person should be allowed to betray the great legacy of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. It is hoped that Yadvinder Singh Sandhu who claims to be a relative of the martyr will not be party to the second hanging of Bhagat Singh," he said.

The book

Bhagat Singh's notebook was handed over to his younger brother Kulbir a day before the 23-year-old revolutionary was executed by the British at Lahore Central Jail, with Rajguru and Sukhdev on March 23, 1931. The revolutionary's jail notebook was first published in Hindi in the early 1990s and again towards the end of that decade. It was published in Punjabi a few years ago. The 288-page coffee-table book will have a scanned version of the original manuscript and a printed version of the text on the facing pages.

Dunno whether Bhagat Singh would have liked any of the current crop of leaders being associated with him in any way. He was an avowed atheist and leftist, not exactly the sort of ideological bent our folks are known for. Although there is also an equal chance that being the sort of person he was (as evidenced by his letters) he just would not have given two hoots, shook his head and ignored the brouhaha. His 1931 essay remains a must read, albeit it is frowned upon and disliked by many.

I always wonder during those 50 years of struggle of independence we saw towering personalities ....and when compared to them today's leaders seem like dwarfs ....in front of giants ...I am even ashamed to call them leaders ....

what happened ? why we do not have single visionary leader ?

( Don't tell me modi is the 'one' .....he is a 'lesser evil' to choose between 'host of greater , and the greatest evils'.....)

This question always bothers me !

why in country of billion people we can't have single good , clean , visionary leader ... there were so many at that time ...and none for now !!!

Dunno but then Bhagat Singh was no "leader", he was a revolutionary. He was exceedingly sharp, a fact belied by his most famous representation, so he may have done well as a leader too. Who knows, perhaps it proves the saying "cometh the hour, cometh the man".

Although Bhagat Singh was not a man much bothered by legacy and all that. The above article is just drama, as if any of our politicians or leaders are so spotless and surrounded by a halo. Its not as if a Sonia or a Sibal would do anymore justice to what he stood for.

Modi should not be invited for this purpose.

This is not about politics.... May be some freedom fighter or army chief will be better option.

Obviously. Modi represents everything that Bhagat singh despised. It is like asking Adolf Hitler to release the Diary of Anne Frank.

Same story applied to bloody congress leaders aka gandhi who are eating butter bread for name of Mahatma Gandhi.

This thread is about Bhagat singh book

the kin of bhagat singh found a golden chance to cash seeing Modi might be a next PM

Lets put this in proper perspective.

1. Bhagat Singh was hanged for throwing a BOMB in the Assembly. Not one, but two !! He was no saint. A patriot ? Of course, but not exactly the hero material you would want your children to emulate.

His action injured 1 englishman and 3 Indians. George Ernest , B. A. Dalal, R. B. Rao, Shankar Rao and S. N. Roy. Thankfully no one was killed.

2. For a family of such a person to raise doubt's on Modi smells more of politics.

3. Bhagat Singh, for better or for worse, is an Indian Hero. His family can no more claim him than the family of Mahatma Gandhi can claim him. All Indians can claim him. Those who admire him and all those who dont.

4. Reality is Bhagat Singh was more useful dead than alive. As a martyr he inspired more people than he could have with his communist agenda, if he was alive. This of-course is purely my opinion.

I personally believe ...Bhagat singh was a ' leader ' , 'hero' and 'revolutionary' in his own right ...self made !

( Not crowned by sycophants ....and anointed by wannabe followers )

His character is absolutely astonishing ....sometimes simply unbelievable ....sometimes it is hard to believe that such man ever existed ....

A leader can't be defined on basis of just following ....I believe a leader is the one who sets an example and has deeply appealing moral authority that he has earned through his own actions ...

You can say Bhagat singh has left his legacy through his actions ....I am sure many must have been inspired by his acts of bravery and courage !!! He is leader of all those martyrs and revolutionaries ...for he leads among all by his act of immense sacrifice amidst savage tyranny ...
