Azerbaijan seems to be looking seriously at rejuvenating its air force with Chinese-Pakistani fighter jets, the state news agency APA reports. They cite a source from the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, one of the builders of the aircraft, at the big Dubai air show:

Members of the Azerbaijani delegation watched the JF-17's demonstration flights at the airshow, the PAC officials said.

They said that several rounds of discussions had been held with the Azerbaijani side, but that talks had yet to reach the purchase and sale stage. They said that the initial size of the order had been determined, however. PAC is meeting orders from Pakistan’s Air Forces at present and would be able to meet an Azerbaijani order in the next few years.
This is not news, exactly; Azerbaijan has been talking about this for at least four years. To quote from a news story then:
In the spring of 2007, at the international military exhibition IDEAS in Dubai, the Azerbaijani side became interested in the multi-functional JF-17 fighter developed and produced jointly by China and Pakistan, as well as small-bore weapons and tanks made in Pakistan...
In 2009, APA was reporting it as more or less a done deal.

So is this anything new? The JF-17 only entered service in Pakistan in 2010, and doesn't yet have a single international buyer, so it's not remarkable that Baku hasn't pulled the trigger yet. And this would seem a logical plane for them to buy, as U.S. aircraft are off the table for political reasons and buying from Russia would be difficult, given Moscow's alliance with Armenia (the recent S-300 sale notwithstanding). All that makes Azerbaijan a good candidate to be the first air force in the Caucasus or Central Asia to buy a non-Russian aircraft. But that still could be some time away.

UPDATE: Steve Trimble of Flight Global writes in to note: "Russia could still complicate the Azerbaijani order. The JF-17 is powered by the RD-93 engine, and the only supplier is Russia. So any JF-17 deal would require compliance by Moscow." Which is a good point, though it wouldn't have quite the same symbolism as selling MiGs or Sukhois, and so the JF-17 would still be a less controversial sale.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is looking for buyers for the JF-17 Thunder multi-role fighter jets it has co-produced with China.

An official told Dawn on Saturday that funds generated through the sale of the combat aircraft would be used in efforts to modernise Pakistan Air Force which was already emerging as a potent outfit with the recent induction of force multipliers.

He said that besides Turkey, some countries of the Middle East and Africa were taking keen interest in acquisition of the aircraft.

He said that two JF-17 Thunder aircraft of the PAF, manufactured at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra, had flown to the United Kingdom to participate in the forthcoming Farnborough Air Show 2010, scheduled to be held between July 19 and 25.

The JF-17 Thunder is an all-weather and multi-role combat aircraft that has potential to be the mainstay of any modern air force.

The sources said the serial production of JF-17 Thunder had already started and ultimately some 250 aircraft would be inducted in the fighter fleet of the PAF.

The first squadron of JF-17 has already joined the fighter fleet and the second squadron will be inducted by the end of the year.

They said the PAF had invested in the force multipliers like air-to-air refuellers, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to enhance its capacity and capability to undertake complex operations.

He said that efforts to enhance capacity of the PAF would continue in the wake of growing importance of air power which played a vital and decisive role in war situations.

The source observed that participants of the Farnborough Air Show would prove to be a good forum for interacting with people interested in JF-17 Thunder and booking orders for supply of the potent combat aircraft.

The Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) is one of the world’s most iconic global aviation events.

FIA holds a prominent position in the aerospace calendar taking place on a biennial basis (once every two years) over one week in July.

The first five days of the show are traditionally trade days only, followed by a weekend where the exhibition is opened up to the public.

The most recent airshow, FIA 2008, was a record-breaking year for business with $88.7 billion worth of orders announced during the show.

The 2008’s event featured 165 aircraft in static displays and spectacular flying displays and the public weekend attracted a staggering 153,000 visitors. The upcoming Farnborough International Airshow is certain to be the most exciting to date.

With its existing exhibition halls, flying displays and UAV pavilion, FIA 2010 will evolve its business theme to include a number of new networking initiatives such as a themed conference and seminar programme, a ‘meet your buyer’ event and a day dedicated to the International Futures for Youth.

Additionally, FIA 2010 will feature a dedicated ‘Space Zone’ and enhanced UAV presence.

Who was saying that Eastern Europe is not a market for JFT

If CATIC pitches FC-1 backed by soft-loan, no wonder we may see FC-1 roaring the skies of eastern Europe one day......

hav'nt read the previous posts but my understanding is......

1- JF-17 is an exclusive designation for the PAF.
2- any potential export orders will be under the FC-1 designation which will have 100% chinese components. having said that if the chinese engine issue is not resolved soon, then china will supply any export orders with the russian engine.
3- PAC Kamra production lines will be busy with the JFT orders until 2013-14. by then some movement is expected in the exports order processing - Zimbabwe (12), Azerbaijan (24) & Egypt (48) are in early or late stages of negotiation to finalization of MoU or LOI.
4- JFT will be a platform with totally different capabilities than the FC-1
5- Russia will provide the stiffest challenge to the FC-1 export plans with its MiG-29.
6- the price/unit will be the biggest advantage to the FC-1 marketing company.

Concerning the options of subsystems for the FC-1 on offer, if you check the AVIC website, they are offering the Falcon S-7 radar http://www.catic.cn/indexPortal/hom...taid=4323&columnType=102&likeType=view&ckw=AR . Speculation is this is the Grifo S-7. So there seems to be more than just the KLJ-7 on offer.
I think it is reasonable for the Chinese to market the FC-1 with options of engines and radars and to address integration issues upfront, i.e. so by the time a customer is interested, all radars and engines options are on the table, tested and certified – considering Pakistan, Namibia and Bangladesh went with the Grifo-MG for the F-7G orders. Possibly Nigeria went for the Grifo too.

Even if PAF went for the KLJ-7 instead of the Grifo-S7 and cited very close/comparable in performance instead of cost, it is possible air forces like Nigeria who we have been told are interested in the FC-1 could prefer the Grifo-S7 if they have already invested and have experience with Grifo.

any western subsystem not under embargo would certainly be offered.

Does that mean that PAF won't get any revenue from Export offers??

PAF will get revenue for all aircraft that PAC-KAMRA(or other facilities) participates in the manufacture of.
Most likely FC-1 orders may be split between Chengdu and PAC even with 100% Chinese components.

Even FC-1 will get shared?

Those that are partially or completely built here.
We have the tooling to manufacture the complete airframe, only the avionics and ejection systems will differ.

So Pakistan will get revenue from the units that are partially or completely built in Pakistan ?? What about the IP royalty share..?? since Pakistan funded the development of the fighter plane

The IP share is comparatively less when the profit from a co-manufactured aircraft is taken into account.
HOWEVER.
Even with an example completely manufactured in Chengdu there is a section of profit reserved for PAC.

In my opinion, Pakistan must send its Thunders to S.Africa, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan and Kazakhistan.
It will boast the export potential.

S. Africa has no need for Thunder, they are locked in for JAS Gripens. Kuwait's most likely winner is F-18SH but the program for procurement has gone cold, Jordan F-16s are getting MLU so their F-1s have been upgraded there is no room for cash for Jordanians previous we though of JFTs but they opted for F-16 MLU and US influence is obvious heard more F-16s coming with lesser AMRAAMs. Qatar's is in for a expensive purchase by 2012-2013.
