Another General that has spoken quite candidly about the Pakistan Army and the ISI's shenanigans is Talat Masood. He's been quoted as saying some pretty damning things including making it very clear that the LeT is an Army/ISI creation.

Why can't Pakistanis put all this evidence together and have a national conversation about what went wrong? The first excuse that comes up is 'the Americans made us do it'. Whatever the American designs in Afghanistan were, your military establishment was responsible for training and handling those 'assets'; the Americans left the dirty work to you and you did it in a short sighted manner. Additionally, much of what the ISI did had nothing to do with the Americans, particularly the Punjabi terrorist groups.

There are two narratives, one outside Pakistan that sees this history as a product of fundamentalist evil and the another in a Pakistan that believes the nation has been victimised. This is neither a tale of victimhood nor a tale of evil, it's a tale of incompetence. The failure to manage and control strategic assets, the failure to anticipate how those assets might evolve, the failure to control rogue officers who were radicalised by those assets, the failure to separate those assets from mainstream society and the failure to put a 'sell by' date on those assets.

Yes, military men are brave, they are patriotic and they make immense sacrifices- and the Pakistani military is all of those. However, they also made massive mistakes that are costing the nation (and the army) dearly. Hold them responsible and put institutional arrangements in place to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Our Army generals and higher ups, for one, are definitely not extremist mullahs.
They grew up in a liberal environment and have mostly progressive views.
But one cannot deny that they've toyed with people's feelings of religion to their own advantage.
Though I very highly doubt whatever the fellow is saying is true because if it was, then Russia, China, India and US would be all up together in order to take down Pakistan.
It's all false.

See this ugly mug he was an exemplary general mullah right at the top did some rather extreme things public lashing of political prisoners not to mention hanging of a sitting PM. Creating using feeding the so called jihad all of his handy work and of course so much credit to go around countless names....

Former Pakistani ISI Chief (and self appointed spokesperson) General Asad Durrani spills the beans at HeadToHead with Mehdi Hasan at Oxford Union, not televised out yet, confirming worst nightmares of many in the audience at record studios. Some quotes:

"Pakistan is an abnormal country that believes in [Muslim] Ummah... and has helped [militant Islamic] movements in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Central Asian Muslim Republics and Middle Eastern Arab countries"

"Pakistan has and will continue to support Taliban, who should be applauded for defeating World's sole super power" - "the blow back such as Peshawar School massacre is an inevitable and acceptable 'collateral damage' in a long war" -

"Terrorist groups are useful up to a point after which they can be eliminated" -

"Osama bin Laden was probably in ISI's custody and handed over to US for a quid-pro-quot, If this is indeed the case, then ISI did a good job" - "Pakistanis admire and support Bin Laden and Taliban" -

"After 9/11 US did not pay Pakistan [Military] enough and were only provided minimal services in return"

"There is no morality in state craft, there are no red lines or rules in the strategic games between Intelligence agencies and no amount of loses (collateral damage) makes it too high a price to pay"

"ISI cannot be answerable to the kind of Civilian governments we have in Pakistan, Military rule has proved better than Civilian rule in terms of economic growth and good governance - I attempted to destabilize Benazir Government as ISI Chief in early 90s on the order of the then President"

The Interview will be televised at Al-Jazeera Channel in April 2015.

Well first of all whatever he mentioned is open secret, but its the first time you hear it in the open from an important person. The question is why would he do something like that now? It is a very bad move.

Don't know if it's true but if so, it is a very brave move.

Some things need to be said, so that a line can be drawn under it once and for all. That Pakistan is not today's Pakistan I believe.


P.S. Why April? Is something happening in April that this will play into - local elections, planned dharnas...

I'm surprised at the people commenting on a baseless link... seems they only need is some hint of opportunity to spit poison against Pakistan.
People are forgetting, from 1987 to 2000 we had civilian rule, where politicians were absolute dictators.
They changed army chiefs like dirty clothes, which show their absolute control over army.
Now, it is stupid to believe any such BS.
However as far the period of 80's is concerned, no doubt.... Pakistan army did the groundwork to empower Afghans with American weapons, which was appreciated by everyone.
Today, people are criticizing Pakistan, while hugging US... indeed, we are living in hypocrite world.

I remember people applauding Gen Pasha seeking post-retirement employment with Emarati Intel. And its an open secret that Military initially only cared (and to great extent even today) about how much they would get from CSF. Had military cooperated with US in all honesty, we wouldn't have US ignoring Pakistan in strategic matters and most probably the Abbotabad raid.
When Military doesn't disown or bar the ex-generals from appearing on media as "defence analyst" they would have to face the consequences and now they would have to do the damage control whether they like it or not.

1-And then the same afghans empowered TTP with all sorts of weapons and Pakistan has become a security state after 2002.
2-Pakistan is not criticized for its role in 1980 war but what it did afterwards uptil 2014 when Gen Raheel took up the charge and started a clean up.
