Experts to study bird flight to understand aerodynamics better - The Hindu

From the “most efficient aerodynamics mechanism” of birds to that of hurricanes, a whole gamut of issues will be discussed by experts from India and abroad at a three-day international symposium beginning here on Thursday.
At the 6{+t}{+h}symposium on ‘Applied Aerodynamics and Design of Aerospace Vehicles’ (SAROD 2013) to be attended by 600 participants, several areas including re-entry aerodynamics, wind tunnel testing, missile and launch aerodynamics, aerostats and airships, manned and unmanned aircraft, UAVs and mini and micro UAVs.
Briefing reporters about the symposium here on Wednesday, Dr. V.G. Sekaran, Director General (Missiles and Strategic Systems) DRDO, said the Hypersonic Wind Tunnel facility being set up with an investment of Rs.450 crore at Shamirpet would be ready in one-and-half years. The work on DRDO’s Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) would receive a fillip once it becomes operational. He said world over hypersonic flight studies were catching up and DRDO had made steady progress with regard to HSTDV. On the concluding day of the symposium, a roadmap for futuristic hypersonic programme for the country would be chalked out. Dr. Prahlada, Vice-Chancellor, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune said the experts would look into cutting-edge and extreme technologies in the field of aerodynamics. Dr. V.V. Rao, Project Director, Agni-III, said that a good number of students were participating.
