Erdoğan: Young people cannot read their forefathers’ gravestones

“Our Turkish has been subjected to the biggest word massacre in our history on the way to simplifying the language,” says President and AKP Chair Erdoğan, referring to Turkey’s adoption of the Latin script in 1928 and its aftermath.

President and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke at the 2019-2020 Special Awards Ceremony of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism yesterday (January 20).

"I believe that we can protect our culture, identity, history and art as long as we protect our language," said Erdoğan, raising concerns that "Turkish language is not receiving the attention it deserves."

"We do not give the attention deserved to the Turkish language, which is the sign of our national identity and memory," he said.

'Turkish in the hands of executioners'
Erdoğan also referred to the language reform that was undertaken in Turkey after the establishment of the Republic in 1923.

While Turkish had been written in the Arabic script for over a century, the Law on the Adoption and Implementation of the Turkish Alphabet passed the Parliament on November 1, 1928. With this amendment, not only did Turkish start to be written in an adapted version of the Latin script, but there were also attempts to rid the language of words and language use of Arabic and Persian origin and to replace them with their Turkish counterparts.

Speaking against this background, President and AKP Chair Erdoğan said, "Our Turkish has been subjected to the biggest word massacre in our history on the way to simplifying the language."

"The prohibitions imposed on words that we have been using for centuries have not been enough to free our language from the yoke of foreign languages, as claimed. On the contrary, our beautiful Turkish in the hands of language executioners got stuck in an impasse after a while with the words of Gazi himself," added Erdoğan further, referring to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first President of the Republic, as "Gazi", meaning veteran.

"In the current situation, young people cannot even read and understand the gravestones of their forefathers who lost their lives a century ago. Not only our young people, but our university graduates also have difficulties in reading the works written 70-80 years ago," said Erdoğan further.

It is, in fact, not the first time that Erdoğan complained about the young being unable to read what is written on their ancestors' gravestones.
In a speech in December 2014, Erdoğan said, "There are those disturbed by the offspring of this country learning Ottoman Turkish. This is the Turkish that does not get old. This is not foreign. We will learn the truth. They ask, 'Will we learn how to read gravestones?'. A history lies in those gravestones. Can there be a bigger weakness than not knowing this?"
He also said, back then, "Ottoman Turkish will be taught and learnt in this country, either they like it or not..."
Further in his speech at the ceremony, Erdoğan also stressed that "nations that do not protect their language and cannot enrich their language are doomed to topple, just like trees whose roots are drying up."

'Architecture, calligraphy, music...'
Indicating that Turkey has been situated at the crossroads of civilizations throughout history, Erdoğan briefly added:

"Besides Istanbul, which is a value by itself, there are other places in every corner of Turkey such as Hatay, Kayseri, Ürgüp, Hasankeyf, Ephesus and Hattusa which served as the cradle of civilizations throughout history. Excluding the venues where plundered pieces are on display, nowhere in the world can you see works that are similar in capacity and diversity to the ones Topkapı Palace is home to.

"Let alone the whole of Topkapı Palace, it takes hours to duly tour even one chamber of its. Our nation, continuously enriching the ancient civilization that spans thousands of years, has produced unique works in various fields of culture ranging from architecture and music to calligraphy and literature." Erdogan is a product of the system Ataturk put in place the only difference is he grew up in Turkey that was much poorer and divided in class his decedents will take Turkey to more liberal future
Tell that to tards like @PakistaniAtBahrain who would have his arse pushed through his mouth if he spoke disparagingly of Ataturk in Istanbul by Turks. You and I know what the Turks are like.
Your average Turk has other things to deal with honestly they dont have to worry about illegaly migrating abroad and getting shot by Greek border guards its unfortunate Erdogan being a old time just doesn't understand the Gen Z young as much they are suffering a brain drain

. .
You know what makes leaders like Putin,Erdogan and Orban similar is that they both allude to the past that's fine but after 2 decades the younger generations get over that and want something new time for timely transition or sorts
without Atatürk, Turkey would have been a European colony till the end of the second world War ..The man was an Übermensch..but a religious Turkey may turn out to be the foremost superpower of the Middle-East
I say it would be further carved up you would actually get a Megali Hellas or Russian ruled Constantinople by then

I agree with you to some extent.
But I also agree with his overall strategy, leave EU, but pivot to Asia, especially ME.

The thing is, Turkey gain a lot by joining NATO during Cold War, huge benefit. Turkey leverage Istanbul strategic location - Bosphorus, milked west a lot.

But when Cold War ended, EU lure Turkey for damn 30 years, it's now the end of the boring double face talk.

Turkey knew very well that there is no position for Turkey, not possible. The economy benefit is less and less, while Strait of Istanbul is much less important due to end of Cold War.

Turkey must find new way to live better, and play the geopolitics. How to do it?

The importance of ME in general is declining, oil price is dropping, new energy is developing fast, shale oil is eating the pie, etc. What does that mean? It means US and west is shifting focus to East, the fast East. Most economy growth comes from Fast East, China to be specific. In 2020, 78% global growth comes from China.

The decline of ME gave Turkey quite a lot of room to play, the US pivot to Asia strategy created power vacuum.

If, just if, I am Erdogan, I will take the risk and play the grand game in ME.

In my opinion, Erdogan is a populist, no doubt about it. But as a politician, he really doesn't have much choice. Erdogan either please his voters or west, he chose former.

The west will try to overthrow Erdogan anyway as long as Turkey want to be SOMEONE.

The Gulf states, Arab world is declining fast. Turkey, Iran, Pakistan are the strongest nation. Iran is busy on Yankees and Gulf States, while Pakistan is occupied by Hindus.

No pain no gain.

What we witnessed is, Erdogan tried to mend ties with China, leveraging China BRI, political influence to hedge west. I think that's good strategy.

It's more so the decline of the American Empire as we know it but I tend to view geo politics distinct from domestic political sabre rattling Turkey has at least mended from Pan Turkist BS for now working with Russia in Karabakh and toning down rhetoric with the Uyghurs and Xinjiang cause a couple years back it seemed everyone was sick and tired of Erdogan

.
Keep the graves of your relatives anonymous to others by not pasting their "biography" on ------ the sorcerers just need a pinch of that grave's soil to cast a disease/death spell upon the deceased's blood relatives .

Turkey was forced apply pro west policy by Atatürk and his successor, the ARMY.

Atatürk is visionary, but time changed. The legacy of 90 years pro west policy, created nowadays Turkey society.

As a leader, Erdogan power is authorized by the voters, the foundation of his power is weak. The mass is blinded. In a westernized society, a leader pleased a group of people, will pissed off another group of people. The only way of survival is a success after another.
