Arakan and also Burma have big agriculture lands. The Arakan economy slid down only because people are not there to work and produce. Things will change once the Rohingyas go back with full citizenship and rights. There is a possibility that they will work hard in farming, fishery, and business and increase production. With international help, in no time, they will become solvent.

The only issue is the Bamar overseer lords like @Aung Zaya who hate Muslims with no valid reason.

The people of Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and the tribal people of CHT has the same characteristics. Very much extremist, not hard working, don't want to succeed in life, don't have any ambition etc problems can be found in these people.

I have known from the novel "Srikanth" written by Sharatchandra before WWll that the women folks in Burma are more hardworking than their husbands. In the case of Burma note that a vast land with a few populations make them lazy and complacent. People can survive without hard labor and most people are bound to their ancestral farming land where they can survive without making big efforts.

Burma and Indian NE have a matrilineal society, but not BD. However, people's thinking was the same in BD a few decades ago. Now, because of population pressure, the character of the people have changed. For Burma, it needs visionary leaders to make the population productive without the prophecy of high population growth. A large population makes the country lose social fabrics. This is what happened in BD.

However, Burma lost a big opportunity by taking a hardline attitude towards the Rohingya that made it a pariah state in the eyes of western countries. It may slow down the FDIs.

All kind of reasons why. In US, I have read well before cars arrived, there was the stagecoach era....and it was convention that driver would sit slightly to the left because we are mostly right hand dominant etc (so controlling horses was easier sitting just to left).

Because they sat just a little to left (and front passenger if there was one, on the right), it made sense to travel on the right since they could better gauge the oncoming traffic as to better handle their own stagecoach (esp say if the road was narrow)....as less angle between you and the oncoming traffic etc (same reason in LHS traffic countries, driver sits on the right hand side of vehicle).

In case of mainland europe, mostly it was due to Napoleon conquering vast amount of that continent and having the common French system for all kind of things (and I suppose traffic direction too). French and US always influenced each other a lot in those time...so thats why RHS became dominant in continental europe as well (and then this spread worldwide).

British of course stubbornly stuck to LHS for them and their colonies, and also introduced to countries they formed military training/influence with like say Japan (during meiji era) and Thailand (Siamese era).

Canada standardised to RHS given dominance of contact with US economy/market. Sweden switched over (from LHS) to mainland europe (RHS) as well suddenly on one day.

The stagecoach driver would sit to the left so that he could grab his gun mounted to his right easily to fend off robbers while holding the reins in his left hand. And that is how USA got the steering wheel where it is today.

Most people are right handed so it was easier for them to drive right. You can hold the steering with left hand while right hand can free to do your stuff like changing gears etc.
