DRDO India's lumbering dinosaur

Check number of Indian engineering students doing Masters and PhDs in US and European countries. Their number come next to Chinese and Indian engineers are welcomed in companies all around the world.

There are over 40 engineering colleges in my city and UK organize 1-3 day program every year to attract Indian students to UK universities as most of them go to US. They provide the necessary info along with scholarships available.

There is a documentary on Indian engineers from IIT. Watch it.

This is documentary made by US media.

IIT - Indian Institute of Technology - World's Best Educational Institutes & Pride Of India - YouTube

A documentary movie on IIT and its brand reputation. The world's toughest educational institute to get into. Acceptance rate- less than 1.7%. Its a famous saying that combine Harvard, MIT and Princeton - then you will get a feel of the level of IIT. It is very economical and students pay only $700 to study the best-in-the-world education. There are 15 IIt in India, the best ones being Mumbai, Delhi, Kharagpur, Chennai, Kanpur and Roorkee.

Some of Notable alumni include Vinod Khosla, Shailesh Mehta, Narayan Murthy, Rajat gupta, Arun Sarin and many more

The biggest Indian hit movie, '3 Idiots', was based on author Chetan Bhagat's experiences in his engineering life at IIT Delhi.

Students all over India start dreaming of IIt when they are 10 and when they finish their 10th class, they join specialized coaching institutes and study for 10 hours everyday (minimum) for next 2-3 years, and then if they do well then some lucky 3000 people are accepted at these top institutes out of almost 200000 plus applicants. Its a dream.. a way of life.. the best of life.. its best of the India.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a group of 15 autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institutes of higher education established and declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India. The IITs were created to train only scientists and engineers.

In order of establishment, they are located in Kharagpur (1950; as IIT 1951[2]), Mumbai (1958), Chennai (1959), Kanpur (1959), Delhi (1961; as IIT 1963), Guwahati (1994), Roorkee (1847; as IIT 2001), Ropar (2008), Bhubaneswar (2008), Gandhinagar (2008), Hyderabad (2008), Patna (2008), Jodhpur (2008), Mandi (2009) and Indore (2009). Apart from these ITBHU Varanasi is also slated for conversion as IIT Varanasi.

OP is not saying that India is short of talent - It's about DRDO

.
I think DRDO should introduce KPI indicator for personal efficiency and achievement evaluation. Those who lagging behind should be redundant.

Forget bout developing something. India should focus on buying weapons properly. Look at the Gorshkov fiasco. If India cannot purchase weapons properly, how can it develop them.

.
Overall, china is funding billions to reward those scientists and engineered a who achieve great outcome per year. To run a efficien organization, you have to build motivation mechanism and efficient structures for personal career. No talents love to join a languorous company for killing time.

A good project leader is most important for DRDO.

DRDO is reflective of best of Indian talent, being trained around the globe.

Whole western world has tried transferring technology to Indian talent but apparently it didn't worked out well.

IMO, basic education in India, is the area where western countries need to pump some money, otherwise costly trainings to their employees in EU / US will not bear fruit.
If west failed, to tackle the fundamental issues with Indian education system than China will continue to steal world trade.

Having able to communicate in english does not make your engineer or scientist.

No indian prefer buying weapons, you have to buy when you got no choice. India is still in the progress of learning as well as china, we just steps before them. India get access to technology like Rafale and FGFA, it is the advantage for them. When you buy a new weapon, try hard to assimilliate the tech involved in it, and try to build a same one on your own, that is called steady progress.

OTOH failing at english makes cars run on water.

100% agreed. Good project management is sorely lacking at DRDO. Take the basic example of stakeholder communication, they are really bad at it, they will keep declaring dates when they are not sure of keeping them - why? who authorises? what process followed? who is accountable? Its just a media and credit rush.

I can't imagine how the more technical aspects of project management are run.

First ever sensible and balanced opinion from Chinese member I ever come across on PDF :D
Nice post mate.

For short, human resource sort action problem!

It isn't the problem.
1. DRDO is only organisation in India which is handling almost everything in Indian Defence industry.
2. India don't lack the eligible people but goals are set next to impossible.
3. Division of DRDO in 3 Sub organisation and giving each the responsibility of IA , IAF , IN
4. DRDO chief should never be a scientist. Let scientist do their work that's reasearch. Management should be left to Retried high ranking service man

The most difficult is to put a rigt person on the right position at the rigt time.

Einstein like people aren't born every now and then. Reasearch isn't person oriented. Its a team work. so one can use a team with mixed potentials.

But management is a earned skill. If you expect a scientist to master it you are expecting too much.
Govenment burocrate are mess when it come to management due to their own style of work.
Ideal people to do this are generally CEOs of big business corporations. BUT in INDIA they won't be allowed to head DRDO. So next choice is retired services chiefs. They have plenty of skills and required vision for that.

Last I heard GOI has setup a committe to modernise DRDO. let's hope best come out of it
