DRDO India's lumbering dinosaur

I agree with most of the points mentioned. If DRDO was a private organization it would have gone bust long time ago.
Not quite if it was a Private org. it would have to compete with foreign and domestic industries like Tata for the share and would have had to step up the game. Personally I think they should be like ISRO and should be separate and not be bogged down by politicians.

.
The main thing hindering the government agencies are the lack of competition. They know that the military would have to buy their product and that their pay checks are guaranteed regardless of their work. So for a lack of a better way to put it the people have gotten lazy and have figured out a way to keep their jobs by just giving the army the minimum requirements.

Rs 10,000 crore is not a big budget as portrayed in the article, its just around some $ 2 billion, and with this small amount of money they are involved in anything and everything in India, now compare this budget with DARPA before comparing the success rate, within such small amount, one cannot dream to rival the American or British military industrial complex.

Of course DRDO is knee deep in problems like retaining talent, low income and bureaucratic hurdles, but just like Kinetic explained they scored where it hurts the most, anyone with deep pockets can import ejection system or bullet cartridges( u wont even need deep pocket for that), but not SSBN or ICBM, and India is self sufficient in that.

And by the way why DRDO is blamed for LCA here? I thought it is HAL.

In my bachelor study overseas, I met lots of smart and hardworking Indians. Why DRDO can be so languorous and inefficient? Unbelievable! It comes to inability organization and red tape.

Cause those smart and hardworking Indians would not be able to join DRDO.
And the ones who do, forget all their smartness and hardwork, and get transformed into a typical govt employ.

Does caste system have any influence on the involuntarily attitude transformation in DRDO?

Does caste system have any influence on the involuntarily attitude transformation in DRDO?

Nope, purely due to job security..
They do have some really talented and hardworking people, but even if one wants to work, he will have to cooperate with 4 who don't. And it is harder to remove someone than to employ him..
Also, compared to facilities in the west, funding is limited. There is lot of red tape.

It is amazing that they actually get something of the level of agni done.

.
Man given the funding DRDO had up and till recently it is extraordinary what they have achieved. Now they are expanding and getting more funding we are in for a golden period in Indian R&D just wait and see.

.
C'mon guys learn to handle criticism, DRDO has many problems. They have achieved some great feats but then again were they not supposed to?

A big problem I find is that DRDO should not have Govt. employees, that is where the lethargy starts... Make it more of an incentive based job and our organisations will do wonders.. And as suggested by wanglaokan a good idea to make another organisation and ask them to compete... More funding, removing red tape and more autonomous spending authority will help a lot.

This Dinosaur can run and run fast, only India is holding it back..

Nice article until it got to the "SHUT DOWN" DRDO and then one realises that the writer is partly sensible and partly an idiot.
What's needed is to get the payscale high enough to lure/recruit talent.

The one of the main problems as I see it are a lack of good, professional scientists and engineers. How can you get good ones when you pay peanuts! If that's addressed then we have step 1. The next is to develop industry/high tech manufacturing, perhaps in collaboration with foreign firms having the right expertise. There are many more steps that are needed. I would not include reverse engineering simply because it will result in people not willing to collaborate. Furthermore you are left with a bunch of people who are trained to follow - i.e. they are always left copying some part of a previous project/model.

Research organisations should not be shut down. If they are inefficient, they must be improved and that does not happen by shutting them down

Check number of Indian engineering students doing Masters and PhDs in US and European countries. Their number come next to Chinese and Indian engineers are welcomed in companies all around the world.

There are over 40 engineering colleges in my city and UK organize 1-3 day program every year to attract Indian students to UK universities as most of them go to US. They provide the necessary info along with scholarships available.

There is a documentary on Indian engineers from IIT. Watch it.

This is documentary made by US media.

IIT - Indian Institute of Technology - World's Best Educational Institutes & Pride Of India - YouTube

A documentary movie on IIT and its brand reputation. The world's toughest educational institute to get into. Acceptance rate- less than 1.7%. Its a famous saying that combine Harvard, MIT and Princeton - then you will get a feel of the level of IIT. It is very economical and students pay only $700 to study the best-in-the-world education. There are 15 IIt in India, the best ones being Mumbai, Delhi, Kharagpur, Chennai, Kanpur and Roorkee.

Some of Notable alumni include Vinod Khosla, Shailesh Mehta, Narayan Murthy, Rajat gupta, Arun Sarin and many more

The biggest Indian hit movie, '3 Idiots', was based on author Chetan Bhagat's experiences in his engineering life at IIT Delhi.

Students all over India start dreaming of IIt when they are 10 and when they finish their 10th class, they join specialized coaching institutes and study for 10 hours everyday (minimum) for next 2-3 years, and then if they do well then some lucky 3000 people are accepted at these top institutes out of almost 200000 plus applicants. Its a dream.. a way of life.. the best of life.. its best of the India.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a group of 15 autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institutes of higher education established and declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India. The IITs were created to train only scientists and engineers.

In order of establishment, they are located in Kharagpur (1950; as IIT 1951[2]), Mumbai (1958), Chennai (1959), Kanpur (1959), Delhi (1961; as IIT 1963), Guwahati (1994), Roorkee (1847; as IIT 2001), Ropar (2008), Bhubaneswar (2008), Gandhinagar (2008), Hyderabad (2008), Patna (2008), Jodhpur (2008), Mandi (2009) and Indore (2009). Apart from these ITBHU Varanasi is also slated for conversion as IIT Varanasi.

The smart and hard working one go outside to study for post graduate and work for multi-nationals to make money.

DRDO can't pay comparative salary to these engineers. Lack of resources is also the problem.

Most of the smartest people never opt for DRDO and its other sister research organizations.

.
What kind of engineer did you meet and what leads you to think so? Indian engineers like cars come in different grades, generally the more you pay the better the engineer you will attract.

It's really nice to see NOT trolling post.

As you might know from your "comrades" or Internet , no doubt there is caste system in India but what you guies imply is 3/4 decade old.

Today Caste is concern for marriages atmost. Rest of other things are not give any important to it.
