Do India's Space Program and Mars Mission Make Sense?

@RiazHaq Kindly tell us what we should say to 1000's of kids who dream about space research?

Should we tell a 5-6 year old to STOP DREAMING about space as we have poverty and we cannot even spend a "0.1% of what we spend on welfare schemes" to create adequate infrastructure for their research?

Just remember, when you click on Mr Haq's links, he earns a cent or two... so please be generous....
The funny part is the strategy is brilliant, write garbage against Indians, so they would click on the link subsequently making money of the same poorer than sub saharan Indian.... Bravo mr @RiazHaq Intel would be proud...

Poor, backward, third-world countries like India need to focus on the hard work to uplift their mass of poor and hungry people above those in sub-Saharan Africa, not waste billions on rockets and satellites.

Pakistan's Suparco focuses on adv imaging, remote sensing, data collection, analysis 4 apps like weather forecast to resource mgmt

SUPARCO does it on a shoestring budget most of what ISRO does by wasting billions of dollars.

Ok, advance imaging? Which sat is doing that, and with which resolution?

Mr. Wise guy....If I cook in my house then I should add the house cost to food cost......funny arguement

See that is where his problem is!!! He would rather be happy if India dismantles all space infrastructure it has even if it doesn't feed its poor! He is peeved off that a poor country like India, has a robust space infrastructure and ecosystem built around it.

Actually as he rightly envies, it is that space infrastructure that is far more valuable than just a single mission to Mars, per se!

India's future would be much better served it competed for excellence in delivering quality education to its young people who currently rank near the bottom on international assessments like PISA and TIMSS.

Haq's Musings: PISA & TIMSS Confirm Low Quality of Indian Education

It is funny that you mentioned about quality of education. As if there is anything to suggest that quality of Education would have improved with those $74M. It certainly hasn't in Pakistan, and you don't even have a space program to talk about!

On the contrary, just this mission alone inspired me (who is actually a noob in these matters) to read up a few articles on the subject! Now just imagine how many million young and impressionable minds and their parents (poor or rich) in India would have been inspired by this!!! Give us some more time, even the quality will improve!

There is a perfect joke for @RiazHaq
Lady: Do you smoke?
Man: Yes
Lady: How many packs a day?
Man: 3 packs
Lady: How much per pack
Man: £10.00
Lady: And how long have you been
smoking?
Man: 15 years
Lady: So 1 pack cost £10.00 and you
have 3 packs a day which puts your
spending each month at £900. In
one year, it would be £10,800
correct?
Man: Correct
Lady: If in 1 year you spend £10,800
not accounting for inflation, the past
15 years puts your spending at
£162,000 correct?
Man: Correct
Lady: Do you know that if you hadn't
smoked, that money could have been
put in a step-up interest savings
account and after accounting for
compound interest for the past 15
years, you could have now bought a
Ferrari?
Man: Do you smoke?
Lady: No
Man: Where's your fucking Ferrari
then?

Will India's Mars mission Mangalyaan success change the country's fortunes? How will Indian people benefit from it?
