KOLKATA: He's had a six-year honeymoon since his international debut in 2004, been hailed as 'Captain Cool' and led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup title and the No 1 ranking in Tests. But Mahendra Singh Dhoni may be about to suffer the first major setback of his career.

With India failing to win a single Super 8 match in two straight T20 World Cups, there is talk of replacing Dhoni with Virender Sehwag as captain in both one-dayers and T20.

It is possible that India will have a new captain as early as next month when the selectors name the squad for Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. While Sehwag seems the front-runner for the top job, Dhoni will continue to lead the team in Tests, where India is No 1 in ICC rankings. There is apparently a section within the BCCI, which wants Dhoni to be retained even as ODI and T20 skipper due to his track-record, but the selectors seem to be ready to seek a change of guard.

The series of "blunders" by Dhoni in team selection, batting order and tactics are likely to be held against him. His blaming of late-night IPL parties has also not gone down well with the powers that be.

MS Dhoni, who has an imperious track track record as captain, may be about to pay the price for two successive failures in the World T20 tournament.

In fact, some insiders say that the change of guard is aimed at achieving two objectives — one, signalling the BCCI's deep displeasure with Dhoni for speaking "out of turn", and two, deflecting attention from the BCCI which can't be absolved of blame for its failure to prepare the team.

What's making it easier for the administrators to seriously think of axing Dhoni is his below-average form. His tendency to frequently promote himself in the batting order has apparently led to murmurs amongst batsmen who find themselves being constantly shunted up and down the order.

Those claiming to know the selectors' also point out 'shortcomings' like Dhoni's inability these days to come up with his trademark big hits. They cite the crunch match against Sri Lanka in which Dhoni walked in with Gambhir and Raina having provided a perfect platform, but failed to provide impetus. Worse, someone like Yusuf Pathan, who could have taken on the Lankan spinners, got just a few balls to face.

It's a moot point whether any other captain could have fared any better. And Virender Sehwag's own captaincy record isn't exactly awe-inspiring. In fact, Sehwag has even given up the captaincy of Delhi Daredevils, saying he prefers to enjoy the game and concentrate on his batting. Clearly, there are many more dramatic episodes ahead in the soap opera that is Indian cricket.

I personally hope it is. He is way overhyped. He is a below average captain. The team never won because of his captaincy but because we had the best players in the team.

He does not ball, his contribution with batting has been minimal. The only matches he won for us were the ones with the weak teams.
He bats at number 6 or 7. Half of the team is already down at the moment. He scores a 20-25 and stay not out in case we are winning the match and his average shoots up.

There are better captains in the team. He needs to get his form back and most importantly learn how to swing a bat. He is a lappa player. He just swings his bat with all his power and if it touches the ball its a score otherwise, he's out.

He has 0 technique.

lol if he was a pakistani he'd have been long gone and thats not cuz of performance..well maybe cuz of his performance but we unlike you lot have absolutely no tolerance, look at what PCB did to all the senior players..honestly Pakistan is playing with a Under 19 team

But yeah on topic, Dhoni needs to go..that's the only way to put out the media fire..But it shouldnt be just Dhoni there are some other players who need to take some time off

look the guy yuvraj,zaheer(they stay away from most of the matches due to injury,rest from out of form,in tat these guys play one series )

if tey had it in them

tey would not look for ways to cheer in pub to make up for gloomy day after loosing

but would practice harder inorder to tackle shortpitch deliveries

if its true so what happend him in last to times

if you look at all achievement as a captain so find out some players out standing performance ..
if we talk about beating australia in australia so we win because of sachin and ishant . .
if we talk about first t20 world cup so their whole team contributes .

Exactly, the youth thing is overhyped too. Youth is not everything. Its a balance between the youth and the experienced that does the trick.

We need experienced captains like Dravid. Ganguly too was good in his last days. He scored really nice averaging over 45.

Better captain than Dhoni - Name one for me. Sehwag is not upto the mark, Yuvraj is not leadership material, Gambhir faired poorly in his short stint, Zaheer has never led anything at all, Sachin is about through. Who else comes to your mind??

T-20 is actually like lottery, draws were not in out favour. I would assess people based on their Test match performance in which India has reached no. 1.

Playing short pitch was never ever our strength. There may have been a few players who have played it well, not many though come to mind (including Sachin) who have dominated short pitch stuff like other teams have.
