Pakistan is always going through a 'defining phase' of history. Its the inept civilian and military leadership that we are perpetually in this 'defining phase' for all of our history.

Army and the politicians are privileged classes of the country. So while they fight it out for their interests, its the public that foots the bill for their stupidities both emotionally and financially.

Army had been a dominant force in Pakistan politics. Its had moments of total control on Pakistan's political destiny. Remember the initial period of Ayub's rule and initial period of Musharraf's rule.

But they always made a wrong choice which had long term problems on the political front for the country. Musharraf did many good things and so did Ayub but they left political destruction in the wake. This has also stunted nation's political growth.

So I would say this to the Army. If we are in the defining phase, as we always are, please restrain yourself and let the nation decide who the leader of this country should be. In the background, you can ensure that the process to achieve an honest and representative leadership is transparent.

After all, we have to get out of this 'defining phase' someday!

IMO - this setup of democrazy can't work in Pakistan. There must be minimum eduction level limit for both voters (at-least graduation) & contenders (at-least masters with 10 years tax statements) - there must not be any immunity to anyone, servants can be questioned anytime.

How can Kayani warn SC of Pakistan??....there is no constitution for Pak army and the ISI....Pak army,ISI are RULING and Plundering Pakistan.....if anyone dares Pak army or ISI, he gets eliminated....Pak army has forced Pakistanis to become it's slaves....Pakistanis have no voice,no choice...they can't say anything against Pak army or ISI even if they are at fault...there are different set of rules for Pak army and ordinary Pakistani citizens......really it's high time for Pakistanis to get united and stand up against barbaric Pak army and the ISI and teach them a lesson

There's nothing wrong with democracy as an abstract concept, the problem is with the colonial era govt. and power structure as well as the organisation of ministries All this should be built from scratch, not patched up from britain as the need/corruption opporunity arises

While speaking to a group of officers at GHQ, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said, “as a nation, we are passing through a defining phase. We are critically looking at the mistakes made in the past and trying to set the course for a better future. An intense discussion and debate is natural in this process. No individual or institution has the monopoly to decide what is right or wrong in defining the ultimate national interest. It should emerge only through a consensus, and all Pakistanis have a right to express their opinions. The constitution provides a clear mechanism for it.

We all have a great responsibility to shoulder. We should learn from our past, try to build the present and keep our eyes set on a better future. We all agree that strengthening the institutions, ensuring the rule of law and working within the well defined bounds of the constitution is the right way forward. Weakening of the institutions and trying to assume more than one's due role will set us back. We owe it to the future of Pakistan, to lay correct foundations, today. We should not be carried away by short term considerations which may have greater negative consequences in the future.

Armed Forces draw their strength from the bedrock of the public support. National security is meaningless without it. Therefore, any effort which wittingly or unwittingly draws a wedge between the people and Armed Forces of Pakistan undermines the larger national interest. While constructive criticism is well understood, conspiracy theories based on rumours which create doubts about the very intent, are unacceptable.

The integrity and cohesion of the Armed Forces is essentially based on the trust reposed in them by the people of Pakistan. Strengthening this trust will ensure better security of the Country. Equally important is the trust between the leaders and the led of the Armed Forces. Any effort to create a distinction between the two, undermines the very basis of this concept and is not tolerated, be it Pakistan or any other country.

While individual mistakes might have been made by all of us in the Country, these should be best left to the due process of law. As we all are striving for the rule of law, the fundamental principle; that no one is guilty until proven, should not be forgotten. Let us not pre judge anyone, be it a civilian or a military person and extend it, unnecessarily, to undermine respective institutions.

All systems in Pakistan appear to be in a haste to achieve something, which can have both positive and negative implications. Let us take a pause and examine the two fundamental questions; One, are we promoting the rule of law and the Constitution? Two, are we strengthening or weakening the institutions? In the ultimate analysis, all of us would have served Pakistan better if history and our future generations judge us positively.”

No one issues you proper invoices /receits. Even the jewellers doing millions of business pay less tax in a year which I pay (from salary) in a week.

People need tounderstand that documented economy distributes the burden according to affordability, in the absence indirect taxes affect poor people more than they do richer people.

CBR also need to introduce innovative methods to bring mor epeople in the tax net, for example they can allow tax credit on medical bills, thus getting doctors in the net.

In the west every person 18 years or older regardless of his status (student, employed, un-employed, self employed) has to file tax return. Paksitan should dothe same, at least it will create millions of seasonal jobs at time of tax filing.

Pakistan is being run on Indirect Taxes - as direct taxes contribute less than 20% of tax revenue. Common man also pays hell of surcharges on petrol, gas and electricity. Common salaried person also pays income tax as per law as companies give them salary after tax deduction. common man also pays 10% advance income tax on his phone bills. Army get their budgets from tax revenues, yes they are also running businesses but that business are also of public money, generals haven't made investments from their own pockets.

I think kiyani is only making mockery of himself, what he needs to do is reinstate Aslam Baig and Asad Durrani like he did in the case of 3 corrupt jernails who involve in Rs 4.3 billion corruption so SC can't take action against them and obviously media won't talk. My post was in response to an impression that common people don't pay taxes, and the essence of the post was that actually it's a common man who is majority contributor to govt. revenues. Our tax policies and collection methods is altogether a different debate.

You are missing the (newly introduced) security tax which is about 20% of the original value.

In addition, you have to higher private security and organise basic infrastructure from your pocket, pay bribes as you even walk through Pakistan and the buy low quality food and unhygienic food in black market.

On top of that this nation end up accumulating various international and national loans.

What politicians return to Pakistan is stealing and corruption.
