I dont agree with that. Im a Lahori, my cousin is married to a Pashtun, my aunt is married to a Bihari, my maternal grandmothers family are Kashmiris. Such mixtures are very common thing in Lahore @Armstrong . Throughout my childhood I never saw any discrimination against non Punjabis or non Lahoris for that matter. Heck one of my dads best friends family from androon shehr had migrated there from Delhi in 1947. I never knew or realized this till I was in my late teens cuz none of our elders ever said that they were different from us.

I bet good 40-50% people of Lahore are not even west punjabis but all identify as Lahoris.

As a proud punjabi who is well acquainted with Karachi, I'm glad we kept our gates closed. It's the reason why Lahore is a peaceful city while Karachi is a warzone.

Absolutely baseless & false facts portrayed in this article. In reality Paktuns owns 90% of transport business not only in Punjab but in whole Pakistan & from past few years they are purchasing major bus stands in all over big cities of Pakistan. They are major shareholder in Carpet/Rugs business. They own fruit markets in various big cities. They are purchasing properties in Punjab. Look around you you'll find Pakhtuns running business in almost every walk of life. Please avoid spreading intentional discrimination among us by promoting west based biased articles in Dawn. Karachi is most diverse, we have people from everywhere, people have misnomer that everybody here is urdu-speaking

same thing in karachi, majority of shops i been to were owned by Pashtuns and cabs,buses,rickshaws were all driven by pashtuns; security guards and drivers are also most Pashtuns or Azad Kashmiris

Bibi just leave it, pakhtuns are found in every corner of punjab villages. How many punjabis in KPK? few dozens in peshawar. You are probably mistaking native hinko or muhajirs people as punjabis.

Come up with a new term..? Be creative.

Or better yet..integrate. You see, while you cannot be a Pakhtun from living in Pakhtunkhwa, nor a Baloch from living in Balochistan, or a Gilgiti from living in Gilgit-Baltistan....you can be a Punjabi from living in Punjab (you don't even need to learn the language, most people will speak Urdu). Similarly, you can just be a Sindhi....that doesn't speak Sindhi, or if not then just a Karachiite since you are (in every sense of the term) from Karachi. Just like all other Karachiites, regardless of the place of origin.

Damn those black-faced Punjabis and their evil ways. But maybe you just forgot even the average black-faced Punjabi is tired of them black-faced policemen. Just maybe it's nothing personal against Pakhtuns, and these policemen would treat everyone the same.

My brother studied in Lahore and so are my relatives and friends studying there currently but nobody complained about such discriminations..I spent a week in Lahore about 2 years back and we visited many places there,heck we would come to our hotel room after 2 or 3 in the morning but nobody bothered us,in fact I enjoyed my stay there very much because nobody stares or interfere with you...let's not make generalization based on certain incidents..

I refute this article 100%. I am a resident of Lahore, and i am quite aware of what is happening in my city. The only crackdown that has happened is against the illegal Afghans, their ghettos were largely uplifted and they were deported back to their country. These Ghettos were the result of increase in street crimes in Lahore. This is why tough security measures had to be taken and these people shipped back.

Any Pakistani Pushtun Brother with a valid NADRA I.D was left alone and allowed to carry on with their business. Anyone without a valid I.D Card was picked up and sent back. These so called Puktuns are Afghans, not Pakistani Pukthuns.

I've been living in lahore for the past 2 years (on/off) and to be honest I've not encountered any discrimination (yes ethnic discrimination)... I have Pashtun Frnds here in lahore from Chaman and even as far as South Waziistan (educated folks)... And they can attet to that ... Apart from stereotypical joke (between frnds) there is no hostility .. We even have an urdu speaking frnd (his grandparents migrated from bikaner,Rajhistan india.. He also claims Pashtuns descent lol).


The issues highlighted in the article seem more like trader vs trader conflict (which I've witnessed here too) rather than racial discrimination.

But than again you will find arseholes everywhere in the world.

We Lahoris are very hospitable people. It is only the Afghans who are facing a crackdown. Ever since the Afghan Basti was uprooted and closed down, street crime has reduced by almost 30%.
