Church head nullifies move to remove Kottayam bishop

If Christians are demanding that India be a liberal secular country that respects their right to propogate then Christians have a reciprocal duty to ensure that this kind of social boycott due to interaction with other relegions don't take place. There must be a ban on these things across all relegions.

Laity forum moves court over denying burial rights to Priyanka Chopra's grandmother

KOTTAYAM: The Laity forum of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian church filed a petition in the court regarding the denial the right of late Mary John Akhouri, maternal grandmother of Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra, to get buried in the cemetery of her parish church in Kumarakom. Paul Varghese and E P Johny, both hailing from Ernakulam, filed the petition before the Munsiff Judge at the Munsiff court, Kolenchery. The petition is for action against the concerned people who denied the permission of burial.

The judge received the petition and issued orders to send notices to the defendants which include the Jacobite Syrian church, Catholicos, St John's Jacobite Syrian church, Attamangalam, managing committee of the church and the vicar of the church Fr Simon Manual. The hearing of the case will be on July 15.

The petitioners stated that as per Clause 195 of the constitution of the church, late Mary John Akhouri is a Parish member of the church. The church can deny only the right of a member to attend the General Body of the church as per this clause. They also argued that there is no proof that Mary had abandoned her faith in church. The greatest proof that she continued to have the faith in church is her desire to be buried in her parish church. They also argued that the membership of Mary remain admitted and proved by the statement of the Catholicos that her burial was conducted in the Ponkunnam church by the Jacobite church.

They also argued that as per the 2002 constitution of the church, nobody in the church has any power or authority to expel the primary membership of a member of the church. This is the same case with parish church also, they said in the petition. The primary membership is obtained through baptism and Mary was baptised in Aattamangalam church.

Meanwhile, the relatives of Mary John Akhouri said they have no objection in the move by the Laity forum. "They had consulted me before approaching the court. I told them to go ahead," said Elias Kavalappara, cousin of the deceased. However, the family is not interested in a legal battle with the church, he said.
"Our family established this church and contributed to its growth. The whole issue was blown out of proportion due to the ego of the vicar of the church. So the family do not want to enter into a direct legal battle with the church," he said.
