You got a very important point. Taiwanese military are ALL Conscript, and many are very reluctant to join their armed forces. Against an overwhelming army of volunteers they lack the will to fight. Moreover they known very well PLA can take over Taiwan within a week, so what is the point to fight for a war that is destined to be lost? Fighting for Greenie or the Blues ? Better be safe than fight.

And If you notice, the will to fight is also inversely proportional(in general) with standard and quality of life. I havent seen 1 advanced country which isnt afraid to even lose 1 soldier to enemy fire, and Taiwan is in this group.

I guess what im trying to say is that Taiwanese are not likely to fight China when 1) they already know the advantage is on China's side and 2) They dont want to waste their precious, comfortable, reasonably wealthy lives for a war they know their country doesnt stand a chance winning.

Another good example is the battle of Iwo Jima. The US had over 100,000 force, while the Japanese had 20,000 in defense. Taiwan can call up a force of 3 million in defense. China would have to muster the largest amphib campaign in history. And China has nowhere near the capability or experience to do so.

Actually the Chinese army was bigger than the Japanese one in WW2, also Chiang knew the western powers and the USSR can't allow Japan to get the whole of China so they will join in. Also N Vietnam knows they have the support of China especially troops so they can go ahead and challenge USA and won.

A Chinese-American is culturally NON-CHINESE as stated by Mr. wanglaokan there. In the same vein, a person who identifies as a Taiwanese must be rejected by China. A Taiwanese is just as non-Chinese as a Chinese-American. We non-Chinese in this forum did not made it up. One of you did.

That means the Taiwanese will fight. The fact that they spent so much of their hard earned money over these decades cannot be underestimated regarding their willingness to defend their ways of life. Whether the US will assist them or not is for a different debate, but if you are willing to look at the geography in an objective manner, all the US have to do is keep the eastern side of the Taiwan island clear and the Taiwanese will make any invasion practically impossible. You cannot defeat the US Navy and your admirals knows it. You can boast DF-21D all you want and it will be for naught.

The Chinese troops tied up millions of Japanese troops in China, despite the colonialists of UK, France and USA giving Japan the go ahead due to Hitler in July 1939. They change their minds after Japan move troops down South to Saigon.

Also the nationalist Vietnamese had Chinese help when they fought the french for their Independence, before 1949 they were an irritant that the French can crush. After 1949, China gave a lot of equipment and training to the Vietnamese independence forces until they gain their war of Independence in 1954.

Most likely, just like the rest of your fellow Chinese on this forum, you have have never served, so essentially, you are clueless on the reality of war, battles, and combat. You guys think that it is clean and always go according to plans and technical specs of the hardware, ie: if a jet can track 10 targets, it can kill 10 targets. You think it is easy and safe to cross 100 miles of water when military history showed it is not. The harsh reality is that if the PLA cannot guarantee the survival of at least %75 of its amphibious force, there will be no invasion of Taiwan.
