A close up of a cage: Surveillance systems in China have become highly advanced in recent years (Reuters)

Surveillance systems in China have become highly advanced in recent years (Reuters)
Government officials in China have apologised for “shaming” people for wearing pyjamas in public.

On Monday, photos of a number of residents in Suzhou, Anhui province, wearing their pyjamas while walking in the community were published on a WeChat account operated by the local government.

The officials stated that the people were being identified as part of an initiative to “expose uncivilised behaviours and improve citizens’ quality”.

The online images, which were caught by surveillance cameras, included information such as the person’s name and ID card number.

Officials argued that residents were banned from wearing pyjamas in public because the region was entering a national “civilised city” competition.

Other “bad behaviour” exposed by the local government online included “lying [on a bench] in an uncivilised manner” and handing out advertising flyers.

While the images shared were captured by CCTV cameras, of which there an estimated 170m in China, residents were also encouraged to send in photos of anyone partaking in “uncivilised behaviours”.

Following media attention and criticism online, the message was deleted and the Suzhou authorities issued a public apology.

“We wanted to put an end to uncivilised behaviour, but of course we should protect residents' privacy,” officials said in a statement, according to the BBC.

The officials added that they would, in future, blur people’s faces out of the images instead.

Last year, it was revealed that researchers in China had developed an ultra-powerful camera capable of identifying a single person among stadium crowds of tens of thousands of people.

The 500-megapixel camera was developed by scientists at Fudan University, in conjunction with Changchun Institute of Optics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The resolution of the camera is said to be five-times more detailed than the human eye and was built for surveillance purposes, with Chinese state media praising the camera’s “military, national defence and public security applications”.

So the state will now decide what people wear and don't as long as its not indecent or walking naked?

I wonder what's it like to live and breathe in an open air prison and not even know one is living in a prison.

The State decides what to wear, what not too....what is ok to eat...what is not....what religion is ok, which is not.

Obviously, the State has improved, or is in the process of improving, the living conditions of it's people...so everything else can go out the window...

Who needs rights when you're rich huh?? :D

Oh but here's the catch...you need facial recognition to buy a train ticket, buy food and many other things!

And if the State doesn't like you for speaking up against it....guess who's gonna have to live on the streets?? (and be put in jail for "not having a house").

Thank You for not being a blind follower! :enjoy:

P.S. Don't forget the "Social Credit System"

I wonder what's it like to live and breathe in an open air prison and not even know one is living in a prison.

Ever heard of "Himalayan Air"?? Google it lol...

Back when smog was a real problem in China (don't know if it still is).....people wore face masks all the time and even bought "Himalayan Air" packed in cans! :D

The Chinese should learn that surveillance's top priority must be about protecting people's privacy.

This is a basic human right. They forego the ability to surveil when people's basic rights are not protected.

I like this attitude of Chinese. Punctual and professional.

The Chinese didn't reach their success by wearing pajamas.

We know that nations that walk around in pajamas haven't achieved anything. They lecture others about human rights and what not, but they are zero in the field of science, tech and trade.

Wow a direct correlation between clothes and intelligence? You must be very smart to see something that no scientist has ever seen.

you should also see that the city you’re defending isn’t even defending itself. They’ve admitted they did something wrong

but I expect things are about to get really bad for a Chineses citizens. Nothing can replace the feeling of freedom. These systems take that away

You did not understand a thing of what I said and meant.

It is not the clothing, but the behaviour and mindset.

Nothing is going to get worse for Chinese people. They are smart and organised. The state has the responsibility of keeping their masses sharp and professional.

Why are you hiding your flags? What is your purpose?

China has been gone far away from Confucianism.

The behavior above is the behavior of using the law to scare the people, to be civilized.

While Confucianism teaches us to use education to civilize the people.

When using the law, people will return to the bad habit once no one sees them. But by using education, they will do the right because they understand and it came from their heart.

China has gold, but for now, no one able to recognize it.

Suit and Tie makes a man successful?? Whereas Pajamas don't??

Did you ever hear about the tale of the Afghan Taliban the Wise?? :D

They wore "pajamas" and blew up "professionals".....30+ nations worth of "professionals"...;)

Ever saw those videos of 14 year old Houthis blowing up Yemenis, Saudis and mercs??

Tech companies in the US, small and big, sometimes enforce "business casual" policy.....you can even come in with pajamas if you're in a startup.

Nothing wrong with reminding the lady that casual behavior is savage.

The State always works against the commoner.....all high profile CCP'ers don't get broadcasted on that billboard.

The problem is that you guys have no idea of the political and constitutional structure of China. The public shaming act as mentioned has nothing to do with a totalitarian authority's command in a nation as a whole. It's the local government under its autonomy undertaking this act.
Actually it is quite common for lower level governments to violate constitution or the existing status in the local administration. That's where the system in china is rather inmature than intended evil. If you guys have read the report of 19th CCP assembly, they are going to adopt several levels of Constitutional Review system targeting this phenomenon (though I think the major motivation is to cut down autonomy of lower level governments).

Just a view point for reference as a Chinese law student.
