China’s popularity in Bangladesh dips a bit over Myanmar issue

How can Bangladesh give us strategic depth? It is surrounded on all sides by India, with a government installed by India.

China doesn't have a land border with Bangladesh, which wouldn't matter anyway since Bangladesh sold us out on the Sonadia port project. Imagine we had built a huge project like CPEC in Bangladesh only to have the port project torn out of our hands at the last minute.

Sonadia cancellation was due to US and Japan mainly. BD cannot afford to upset those two countries bearing in mind how much it exports to them and the development assistance it gets from them. Indian influence was minor.
Brother you know I respect you a lot, you are one of my favorite members on this forum, but I can't agree with you on this topic.

China has to take care of Chinese interests first.

And it upsets me that so many Bangladeshi members are bashing China just because we are protecting our own interests in the UNSC. After what happened with Sonadia port we never had any obligation to help them.

There were never any problems between Chinese and Bangladeshi members on this forum until the Rohingya crisis, when they blamed us for supporting Myanmar's attacks on Rohingya.

Is it not true that China is protecting the vile Bamans from economic ruin?
Without Chinese support, this whole Rohingya disaster would never have happened.

Utter awami bs to deflct its indian stooge act. It was indians obstructed the sonadia port until to the last moment when Hasina went to China and was about to sign the agreement. Awami league indian master called her and agreement was not signed.

Remove this part. This kind of remark doesn't speak good of ourselves.
there is nothing good about indian stooge awami league and Hasina and indian dalal like yourself.

The US was mainly behind Japan's obstructionist action on the Sonadia port.

China's soft stance was also a problem. If China could offer more political and military promises to Bangladesh, not only economically, then I see that BD would indeed jump into China's ship with little hesitation.

And China's non-interventionist policy will soon turn into a liability. The US was too extreme in its interventionist policy, whilst China went to the extreme side of the opposite direction.

Unfortunately BD is very susceptible to US/Japanese pressure.
Unlike countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the US could ruin BD by just blocking imports and
development assistance. What the US does, Japan would also follow.
I am sure that China's leaders are well aware of the extremely difficult situation that BD was in
as regards Sonadia. A BNP government would have made exactly the same decision.
As BD economy grows and exports to China hopefully keep rising like since 2010, in a decade's
time BD will be able to shrug off US/Japanese pressure and allow far greater co-operation
with China.

Chinese president discusses Rohingya crisis with Myanmar army chief

Chinese president Xi Jinping met with Myanmar’s top military general in Beijing on Friday (Nov 24) and discussed China’s support amid international criticism over its treatment of the Rohingya minority, according a statement from the general.
China has offered diplomatic backing to its southern neighbour throughout the crisis, despite growing pressure from Western countries for the Myanmar military to be accountable for alleged atrocities.

More than 622,000 members of the Rohingya Muslim group have fled from Buddhist-majority Myanmar’s Rakhine State to Bangladesh in three months since insurgent attacks on security posts sparked a brutal counter-insurgency campaign.

China helped to block a resolution on the crisis at the UN Security Council, while the United States this week called the response by the military and local vigilantes ‘ethnic cleansing’, echoing earlier statements by senior United Nations officials.

According to a statement on the Facebook page of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, he and the Chinese leader on Friday discussed the ‘promotion of cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries, the situation of China standing on Myanmar’s side at the forefront of the international community regarding the Rakhine issue,’ and other issues.

Min Aung Hlaing arrived in China on Tuesday and has largely met Chinese military officers during his visit.

The statement also said they discussed ongoing talks between Myanmar’s government and myriad ethnic insurgent groups, some of whom are based along Myanmar’s shared border with China.

According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, Xi said China was closely watching the peace process and was ‘willing to play a constructive role… for security and stability in their border areas.’

The Xinhua account did not mention Rakhine, but cited Xi saying that China ‘always respects Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity’.

Suu Kyi to visit China amid Western criticism over Rohingya exodus

Myanmar’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, will soon visit Beijing, state media said on Monday, as the southeast Asian nation appears to draw closer to its northern neighbour, China, amid global criticism over an exodus of Rohingya refugees.
Myanmar has bristled at pressure from Western nations over its armed forces’ brutal response to August attacks on security posts by Rohingya Muslim militants in the western state of Rakhine.

The United States and the United Nations have accused Myanmar of “ethnic cleansing” and called for the military to be held accountable over allegations of killings, rape and arson that sent more than 620,000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh.

China, however, has backed what Myanmar officials call a legitimate counter-insurgency operation in Rakhine, and stepped in to prevent a resolution on the crisis at the UN Security Council.

News of Suu Kyi’s visit comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese military leaders welcomed Myanmar’s powerful army chief Min Aung Hlaing last week and pledged closer cooperation.

The state-run daily Global New Light of Myanmar said Nobel Peace laureate Suu Kyi would “soon” depart to attend a Communist Party of China-hosted forum of world political leaders in Beijing.

Suu Kyi’s spokesman Zaw Htay could not be reached for more details, but the meeting begins on Thursday and runs until December 3, according to China’s official news agency Xinhua.

Myanmar is in the international spotlight this week as Pope Francis makes the first visit by a head of the Roman Catholic church to the Buddhist-majority country.

He has previously spoken out about the treatment of minority Muslims to whom Myanmar denies citizenship, but some Christians fear doing so in the country could provoke a backlash.

Many in Myanmar refuse to recognise the name Rohingya, preferring to call them “Bengalis” to suggest they belong in neighbouring Bangladesh.

strategically Myanmar is important for China, so their tilt toward MM is understandable. they cant afford to push them toward US and India bcoz they need CPEC like economic corridor.

You and many other Chinese members here are all hiding behind the same discourse of 'national interests', no offence, but this attitude actually resembles a small regional power like India, not a global power.

China's first veto at the UNSC came in 1972, against the Bangladeshi admission to the UN. It was only China who were against Bangladesh's inclusion. Yet, you would never see Bangladesh showing any anti-China stance in any sphere, rather we always sought close friendship with China. In fact, the Pew survey in 2014 revealed, Bangladeshis are the second most favorable nation towards China after Pakistanis. While, as far as I know, there is a substantial anti-Chinese sentiments present in Myanmar.

And now, in our time of need, this is the attitude we are receiving from China! If such attitude persists towards its well wishers, China will lose its credibility as a reliable ally in the long run.

China supports integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan. Back in 1972 you are just a spin off from Pakistan, what would you expect China to do?Even now I think that China would side with Pakistan if you two have problems!

When it comes to Burma and BD your friendships are equally important. Royhingya issue is not about country relationship but people!

Chinese don‘t like Burmese at all. Burmese fooled the northwest minorities into Burma Union by a piece of paper exactly as Indians did to their Northeast minorities. In the northwest minorities of burma some of them are Han Chinese or minority Chinese they fought with burmese army for years and suffered huge loses of human life. Tell me if BD or other Muslim countries have ever critisized or commented it as “genocide”?

In Roykine state there are different armed forces fighting against Burmese army for its independence. But its the muslim ARSA started to kill non muslim civilians so they got retaliation.

Talking about Muslim unity you should ask yourself why you accuse IOK freedom fighters and Pakistan as terrorists!

Sonadia cancellation was due to US and Japan mainly. BD cannot afford to upset those two countries bearing in mind how much it exports to them and the development assistance it gets from them. Indian influence was minor.

China cannot hide behind "internal issue" as Myanmar has sent nearly 1 million Rohingya to
BD.

Where did you hear about this nonsense from?

Read my post above! There is NO genocide!China is helping to solve the issue because BD and Burma behave like two kids!If you are not content with China ask US or India to do it!

read all the reports not just home newspapers. ARSA has the worst reputation among the armed gangs in the north of burma!

So why are 1 million Rohingya in BD then? We should send them all to China so Chinese understand who they are defending 100%. Myanmar is an uncivilised state and should not be defended by anyone

Since China fully backs the Myanmar regime, the Barmans felt confident to attack a defenceless civilian population, which led to so many people fleeing for their lives. Only in a war situation do you get exodus like this and there is no war in Myanmar as the ARSA om the whole do not even have guns.

If China just stayed away and minded it's own business then there would be no Rohingya problem. Not very hard to understand.

Arm the boys and men among these 1 million + previous 0.2 million and send them back to fight for their home. We could also send 10-20k Rohingya from China to BD to join them!

Alternatively send your brave BD army to kill those bustard burmese! Anyways don‘t blame China for your problem.

Well that proves you have no argument.

Like I say if China just minded it's own business this mess would never have happened in the first place.

@Sanchez don't bother dude. Take what friendliness you have for BD and stay well away from these things over here.

BD ppl here wants everyone to be crybaby just like them (when even their own PM says good relations with Burma are important and issue should be peacefully resolved etc....and she uses these Rohingya for her own political goals internally, caring 0 for them)....if you aren't you are some heartless barbarian....and it only applies to you, never to BD people that support such person as their PM.

Find better BD ppl in real life to talk to and have dialogue with, my word of advice.
