China called on France on Tuesday to cancel a weapons contract with Taiwan, warning that the deal with the self-ruled island could harm diplomatic relations between Paris and Beijing.

Taiwan's navy said last month it would upgrade the 25-year-old missile interference system of French-built Lafayette frigates, whose sale three decades ago had raised diplomatic tensions.

Taiwanese media said the deal was worth over Tw$800 million (US$26.8 million) to buy the Dagaie MK2 decoy launcher from a unit of French group DCI.

"China has expressed deep concern to France," the foreign ministry in Beijing said.

"We oppose all weapons sales or military and security exchanges with the Taiwan region," it said.

"We urge France to cancel this planned weapons sale to Taiwan in order to avoid harming Sino-French relations."

France sold the six frigates to Taiwan for US$2.8 billion in 1991, causing a freeze in diplomatic relations between Paris and Beijing. (AFP)

Empty threats ... China needs France right now to green light its Huawei 5G.

. .
Hope France continues with it.

Also hope France supports Taiwan attending the WHO meet.

Those huge threads earlier with the CPC trolls here saying taiwan will be invaded any moment now (because of corona fog of war) sure petered off like a damp squib.

@Hamartia Antidote @KAL-EL
Lol... Typical response by anti-China troll. Accuse other even the Chinese members haven't even say anything. You learn that move from American, is it?

LOL! Great timing by China with the Huawei stuff. Now Macron will be rethinking that.

Is there only Huawei deal? Empty threat? Why not ask France to stop recognize one China policy. The empty threat is more from you.

We can cancel Airbus deal.. since the passenger airline industry is down. Not much flight is needed anyway. Marcon will need to think of such consequences.
French are smart businessman. For USD26.8million , it's not worth it.

We all saw those ridiculous threads lol. They were a good laugh, especially when absolute squat happened...as usual....in the end.

And then China only can buy from USA.

Trump will be loving it!

btw - the LEAP engine selected by China for it's C919 airliner is 50% French.

China has little leverage here.

Well the Huawei deal is super important for China considering France's size. And also Macron and the French gov is pretty friendly with China ... why needlessly derail relations?

Exactly ...

That too, in his own words:
