China called on France on Tuesday to cancel a weapons contract with Taiwan, warning that the deal with the self-ruled island could harm diplomatic relations between Paris and Beijing.

Taiwan's navy said last month it would upgrade the 25-year-old missile interference system of French-built Lafayette frigates, whose sale three decades ago had raised diplomatic tensions.

Taiwanese media said the deal was worth over Tw$800 million (US$26.8 million) to buy the Dagaie MK2 decoy launcher from a unit of French group DCI.

"China has expressed deep concern to France," the foreign ministry in Beijing said.

"We oppose all weapons sales or military and security exchanges with the Taiwan region," it said.

"We urge France to cancel this planned weapons sale to Taiwan in order to avoid harming Sino-French relations."

The west is urging China to liberate Taiwan.

France just bit off more than it can chew. This is not China from the 1980s that you can sell Mirages and walk away. A beatup French economy will have to weather yet another hurricane.

.
A diplomatic freeze by Chinese again will cause harm to the Chinese. Let Taiwan have what it wants now. Diplomacy can take a back seat.

. .
And then China only can buy from USA.

Trump will be loving it!

btw - the LEAP engine selected by China for it's C919 airliner is 50% French.

China has little leverage here.
As I say, the aviation industry is down. This year is projected to be negative growth. There is even no need to buy new plane. Airbus is desperate to clinch China growth. We can even wait for 2 years without getting a new plane. Can Airbus wait for 2 years?

The five nation shall liberate turkey. :enjoy:

Good thing is, Taiwan is now a full independent nation with a huge EEZ and soon there will be a american naval base in taiwan (to liberate china)- or to make sure that u dont cause troubles with ur virus.

.
I think Turkey and China needs to be friends. China needs to liberate Taiwan while Turkey needs to kick out Greeks from Cyprus.

Is there only Huawei deal? Empty threat? Why not ask France to stop recognize one China policy. The empty threat is more from you.

French are smart businessman. For USD26.8million , it's not worth it.
The very fact that they are selling arms to Taiwan means that they do not recognize One China policy. Thats the most aggressive action one can do other than war, by selling arms. They are not gonna send personal memos to you.

Sale of military equipment to Taiwan: France rejects China's warning

Obviously, this threat did not disturb the French Ministry of Foreign affairs which rejected the Chinese request. "Faced with the Covid-19 crisis, all our attention and all our efforts must be focused on the fight against the pandemic," replied the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on May 13.

"In the framework of the Franco-Chinese declaration of 1994, France implements the policy of a single China and continues to call for dialogue between the two" French diplomats said. And to insist: "France strictly respects in this context the contractual commitments it has formed with Taiwan and has not changed its position since 1994."
