China to build more aircraft carriers

Chinese Commander in Chief of the PLAN is in the states visiting with the first carrier captain and first J-15 landing pilot.

In the interview, which is part "english" says China has disclosed the details of it's carrier program and the South China sea situation, as well as why there is an increase presence by China in the area.

The US counterparts has agreed on the necessity of China's plans and actions.

Part of what's being discussed is that the carrier is being used for research and has 36 fighters. It's goal is to have an understanding of the carrier and carrier operations. This will determine how China will move forward with its carrier program.

So, China building more carriers is a given, but the time is not now. It will need to be when all the planning has been completed.

Recently there was a military insider who said that a carrier is being built at Dalian. A day later a news source claimed that a company was contracted to build insulation for China's first domestic carrier; obviously this Admiral's statement was deliberately made vague to confuse reporters.

When the carrier was brought back, not only was it empty, ti was dirty with rats and everything. The staff had to clean it before even able to go inside to take a look.

lover's going to love. and better informed than you will ever know

like i said, the ship was not built in china, it was "only" refurbed and fitted out there (and you can trust me not to underestimate the magnitude of that job)....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Liaoning will only ever be used as a training platform, and not for actual military operations, correct? This would make more sense if China's future carriers are going to be based off the Liaoning.

tremendous waste of a perfectly good fighting ship ( and a grand investment of money) that would be.

the liaoning is of course the ex-varyag which is an empty former soviet hull that the chinese rebuilt into a working carrier.

that's what i said, yes

True, but considering that they don't have any real experience with ACs, don't you think it would be better of as a training platform for a while until they can get a 3rd or 4th carrier in service?

It's a training carrier in name only. It's as close to a fully functional carrier as it gets, with advanced j15s and ASW helicopters etc. in fact China are building type 52d destroyers specially for these battle groups, first three have been launched and the first has completed its sea trials. I love how the Chinese always understate things while others boast of things that never happen.

Great news. When China and Russia produce more aircraft carriers and overtake Pacific region from American it would reduce American power projection alot.
But what is the best for Chinese, that they never make hype about their military discoveries, they are just working and keep silent.

Agree. You must distinguish between 'experimental unit' (which can be fully combat capable) and 'training unit' (which suggests less than full combat capability). This being the first carrier, of course she will be used to gain experience. And in that sense only could you possibly label her a training ship. (just like JMSDF DDH16 and DDH21 are destroyers > in name only)

Thusfar, the RUssian navy has yet yo come up with a replacement for its single Kuznetsov carrier (not to mention the 4 Kievs and 2 Moskva's it lost without replacement...) As for China, it will take a decade for a multiple carrier navy to develop. See e.g. India: beyond Vikramaditya there will be a first indigenous carrier and then a larger version : it is a growth path. Meanwhile, the US carrier force is relatively new and getting renewed. Even if the main carrier force would go down to 'just' eight, it is still well more than double what China or India could manage in a decade. Not to mention the dozen LHA/LHD ships, which can also be used in a light/escort carrier role. So, in the case of USN, to paraphrase ' the news of my death is greatly exagerated'....:coffee:

Equipped with only 30 jets, the Liaoning could not generate a “sufficient pulse of power” to knock out a major target with one big strike, and with its ski-jump launch system the range and amount of weapons carried by the jets was “too restrictive,” the study says.

“In terms of Chinese naval aviation, credible combat power will not be achieved until the PLAN [PLA Navy] is able to dispatch at least two carriers on a single mission, and this may not be enough, depending on the defenses they encounter,” Rubel says

“Antisubmarine warfare is not one of the PLAN’s strong suits, so combat credibility even against weak neighbors such as Vietnam, who is reportedly purchasing six Kilo-class submarines from Russia, is potentially compromised,” the study says.

It says that given the serious constraints on the Liaoning’s offensive and defensive capabilities, an attack would only work if the opponent either could not or would not oppose the carrier with diesel subs or other modern anti-access systems.

The credible combat power of Chinese naval aviation is thus compromised until Beijing develops a new class of carrier with catapults and until it significantly strengthens its antisubmarine warfare defenses, the study says.

“Simply put, in a war with the US, Chinese carrier aviation would likely be doomed,” it says.

“In limited wars with regional powers close to home, the carriers might provide some utility, especially covering amphibious or special-forces operations, again assuming that a significant diesel-submarine threat does not materialize,” the study says

Yes..........the Liaoning is used for training, but its obviously a fall on combat ship as well, i mean its armed to its teeth with missile systems for a start.

Come on people wake up!............or do you think there is a casino inside?

China needs a lot of carriers to facilitate trade and maintain freedom of navigation in S.China sea and IOR. A burgeoning PLAN is good news for the stability & development of the region , specially IOR.

US study dismisses value of China?s new aircraft carrier - Taipei Times

- This article failed to mention some important points:

- Aircraft carriers are never alone when it comes to missions. They are always supported by land based aircraft and they are only assigned to specific roles while the main force consists of land based planes.

- 30 4.5 generation fighters are already at an advantage when compared to most of South Asia's air forces. And no, Pakistan and India are exceptions to this since they have large air forces.

- China's Type 054A frigates can carry 32 anti submarine rockets in its VLS cells. That is more than enough to provide a credible anti submarine shield for the Liaoning. This is augmented by the fact that they are inducting the Y-8FQ anti sub plane.

- Taipei Times is also notorious for its very low quality of information

- China does not need aircraft carriers in a conflict with South Asian nations

Sure you do, when you need to get closer to South Asian nations far from your country to bomb.

And which country is so far that it's out of range of the H-6K and J-16 combat radius and the CJ-10K missiles? Or the Type 052D?

You sending bombers by themselves without fighter cover? Oh yeah thats what the carrier is for.
