China-Russia-Saudi Arabia: Globe's Next Superpower

.
Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Vladimir Putin: Mr Prime Minister, ladies and gentlemen,

I am very glad to see you at a SCO meeting to share views on the development of bilateral relations.

We met many times in Davos and in other cities and countries. I am delighted now to see you in Russia, in St Petersburg.

I see with satisfaction that we have regained our pre-crisis trade level, though it is still quite modest for countries like Pakistan and Russia. Pakistan is our major trade and economic partner and an important partner in South Asia and the Muslim world. I am very glad to see you today and to have a chance to discuss our bilateral relations.

Yousuf Raza Gilani (via interpreter): Thank you, Mr Prime Minister. This is our fourth meeting. I am enjoying my trip to the beautiful city of St Petersburg, which is your native city. St Petersburg and Karachi, where I was born, are sister cities and major economic centres.

We have had a wonderful meeting today. As observers, we are impressed by the impetus you gave the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. You can see our dedication to relations with it in the fact that today is a holiday for us. We have received your congratulatory message, and we are spending this holiday in Russia. I had dinner with several Pakistani nationals last night in honour of the holiday.

We are really eager to improve relations with Russia. We are already cooperating in defence and other fields. As you rightly remarked, we should step up our security and economic cooperation. We need to expand contacts as well as infrastructure and energy cooperation within the SCO format. I greatly appreciate your participation in the CASA-1000 megaproject. I think it is one of our countries' best projects. Your announcement of aid was greatly welcomed in Pakistan. We would like to build up our cooperation in energy and electricity.

He never used those words

saudi arabia never said they are going to become a superpower, anyway it is very likely that India will become one along with Chins.
india can never be a "superpower" with over more than 400,000,000-600,000,000 people starving and living below the global poverty line.

Regarding Saudi Arabia becoming a "superpower" (i think a better phrase would be the most powerful country), i think its highly unlikely.

For one, in order to be a "superpower" you need to be able to project both soft power and hard power in the region as well as abroad on foreign lands, much like how the USA is able to do with its Aircraft Carrier Battle Groups.

Secondly, you must eliminate any competition in your neighborhood/region in order to gain dominance and from there you must then gain supremacy over international adversaries, as was in the case of USA and USSR (the former triumphed).

Thirdly, you need to have a 95-100% indigenous weapons production capability as well as industrial based economy. You also need a large pool of home grown engineers and scientists as well as a professional and experienced army that has a record of fighting on the front lines in various wars.

Fourthly, you need a lot of man power, and i mean A LOT, you can't put boots on foreign soil if you don't have enough men.

Fifthly, you need to be able to make other countries dependent on you and the power to isolate your adversaries which will eventually cause them to fall on their own.

Only a few countries have had these qualities in history.

India does not want to be a superpower lol it just wants to improve and get better as a country

India has made significant progress in poverty reduction and the number of poor people in the country is expected to half of the 1990 level by 2015, a UN report said today.

According to the 2010 report of the United Nations on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), While India is expected to reduce its poverty rate from 51 per cent in 1990 to 24 per cent in 2015, reducing its number of extremely poor by 188 million.

"India, too, has contributed to the large reduction in global poverty," the report said.

The Kingdom of Saud is a regional power...that has influence globally ONLY due to its holding of they key Muslim Holy sites.

You are wrong by miles, although the point has some validity.

Soft power of Arabia (whole peninsula) is about race and traditions of Islam advertised as standard or original. Arab origin people are looked up among the Muslims esp in sub continent. They occupy highest stratum in what might be loosely called Caste system among Muslims in Sub continent. That's one of the reasons Indian Islam, initially a Sufi-saint mystic Philosophy version(equivalent to native rishi or sadhu culture) later became hardcore rigid system (both Political and social). Of course, some of the rulers too had a hand in it, but the clergy had a bigger hand and served as motivation in making Islam what it is today in the Sub continent. Had we remained closer to the its roots and philosophy while it spread, the fundamentalists would have never taken over.

Islam now is simply Pan-Arab-ism. I cannot substantiate my claims by simply providing you one or two links on the internet. You can consult any Historian to understand the evolution of Islam in Persia and India,. invariably the conclusion would be something in this lines.

Only a few countries have had these qualities in history.

It's estimated that a country needs at least 100 million people under its direct control to be able to compete in all aspects of high tech today, otherwise you will have require a disproportionate amount of scientists, and not enough lower level workers to maintain industrial and food independence. A country without industrial and food independence is not a superpower... what kind of superpower can be defeated by starving them with a naval blockade lmao?

Back during the British Empire days, Britain had not only an industrial edge over the rest of Europe, their population was very big in Europe.

In addition, prospective superpowers need an industrial economy, with medium-high levels of innovation (relative to historical era and to other countries).

Finally, prospective superpowers need their citizens to have the superpower mentality, while also having the hard power to back it up. A weak country with the superpower mentality is just a laughing stock. This mentality is hard to explain and is hardest to get. Indians, Chinese and Russians all used to have it in the past at some point but none of us have had it for the past 20 years. I think right now only Americans have it today. Even British, Germans don't have it anymore.

.
How does Saudi Arabia come into the superpower model? LOL, they are gonna run our of oil in the next 20-50 more years. Eventually, we will see them riding camels and not Ferraris. Do you all know that they have got most of their gold reserves protected in America? When SA will need it, US will not be giving it back. The U.S always has conditions....

King Abdullah's second visit (After Pakistan) was to China. He went there with 200 officials and law makers. Also make point of that our most valuable military asset (Ballistic missiles) comes from China. We had a rough going with Russia for some time (Afghanistan Chechnya) but now we have a bilateral defense agreement with Russia.

Just correcting the record, as a king, Abdullah visited China first in 2006 January followed by his visit to India as a chief guest to attend the military parade on our republic day.

He then went to Malaysia and it was only after that in feb that he came to Pakistan as a King

Islam now is simply Pan-Arab-ism. I cannot substantiate my claims by simply providing you one or two links on the internet. You can consult any Historian to understand the evolution of Islam in Persia and India,. invariably the conclusion would be something in this lines.

I think you may misconstrued the historical veracity of Islam being pan Arab today as a clear reading of history will not bear this.

You had the initial what historians would say the golden age of the Arab world where Baghdad was a centre of learning and had universities with teacher and students from India china and Europe.

However, since the invasion of Mongols in the 12th century, Arabs have been under Turkic / Mongol rule or other foreign rule till as late as the 1960s. It is a different story though that despite the brutal invasions of present day iraq and conquring these lands, the turcomongols converted from their shamanist/ buddhist creed to islam where they remained the dominant power till ww1. After the ww1, Arabs came under British and French colonial rule and finally one by one the colonies became independent some after brutal struggle like in Algeria.

In the present day, the Arabs are a minority ethnic group among Muslims comprising 19% of the global Muslim population. Infact if you take into account Muslims of the entire Indian sub continent, then you would have 35% of the Muslim population. So just in terms of which region had the maximum adherents, the Indian subcontinent followed countries like Indonesia would be on top.

Soft power of Saudi Arabia is the shrines but there is great diversity in Islamic teachings and practices and countries around the world have actually contributed to the literature on various schools of thought. For example the Sufi school of thought has had strong contribution from central Asia turkey and India of course. So Islam even today is understood to be a universal religion with no special status to Arabs exept in terms of piety. This is more or less a saying of the prophet that is relevant for Muslims who think otherwise.

Yeah I completely understand and know that Indians feel a bit left out because super-power and no India is mentioned in the same sentence.

It does not matter...We know that you guys always looks the world with the prism of religion in all of your aspect...Nothing hard feeling ..but i feel we have different view to see the world and of course with our intrests...It does not matter wheather countries around like Pakistan and others sees us a super power or not ....But we will acheive this status one day...
