China hits Canada hard and Trudeau stays silent

“The little potato got mashed,” said Gerry Ritz.

I’m speaking to the man that was Canada’s agriculture minister for almost a decade about China’s latest moves against Canada’s top exports to the second largest economy in the world.

Ritz knows all about how difficult China can be, how they mix trade and politics like few other countries and how they don’t always play fair. In our past conversations, Ritz has been willing to cut Trudeau and his Liberal government some slack on dealings with China, not now.

Now says Ritz, the man the Chinese nicknamed, “little potato” is getting run over by China.

“Trudeau is going to have to do one of his famous flights and get over there,” Ritz said.

So far there hasn’t been a top level delegation to travel to China, we haven’t even appointed an ambassador to replace John McCallum after he was fired.

China is hitting Canada hard economically and the Trudeau government is nothing more than asking for the beatings to stop.

Although they aren’t even being very forceful with that request.

After spending the last few months punishing Canada’s canola producers, China is now building a list of other companies that they could punish.

That from Canada’s former ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques.

“The central government of China has asked all provinces to make a list of all the ongoing transactions with Canadian companies,” Saint-Jacques told CBC the other day.

That prediction came true as the basic dictatorship in Beijing announced that two pork producers in Canada are now banned from sending products to China.

Drummond Export of Quebec has been selling into China for more than 20 years without problems; suddenly they are being suspended over “labelling” concerns. A plant in Red Deer, Alta., from Quebec-based Olymel is also suspended and more are likely to follow.

Peas and soybeans could be next, some sources say that genetics for beef, dairy and pork are already being targeted in a less formal way.

“It’s just a comedy of errors that is turning into an economic disaster,” said Ritz.

Ritz says the Trudeau Liberals are playing into China’s hand by going along with the idea that the labeling of pork or a scientific disagreement on canola is the real reason behind these spats.

“These are political contests, it is not scientific,” Ritz said.

So after canola, soybean, pea and pork producers who will be next and what will our federal government do?

Based on the list of top exports from Canada to China, we could expect wood or paper products to be next, maybe ores, slag and ash — industrial products that China needs.

We could actually cut off something like coal exports but that is unlikely.

This is what happens when you follow US lines. Canada should look after its own interest too. I know US is a big market for Canada but in order to sustain growth Chinese market was a good oppurtunity that is being lost thanks to pressure of US on Canada

.
Not only will China stop importing Canada products, China will also execute Canadian criminals too! Just let go of Ms. Meng if Canada wants to stop the beatings! The reactions from China so far has caused the "Little Potato" to go numb from head to toe, too funny!

.
Canadian 1/4 of exports for rest of the world exempt USA.

Canada would not mere relying on China & in future Canada will self sufficient to produce item they would import.

Best brains, loyal community will create greatest Canada.

China is a huge country, I don't know why they have to import agricultural products. Don't you produce enough?

China is just like industrial unit, you give them raw material & they will producing it.

What Pakistani manufacturer doing, they go to China & order them with specific quality, in result they produce & give Specific label, while Europe & rest developed countries relying on their Specific merits & quality standards.
China is not self sufficient in raw material.

.
The main problem with Canada is that they don't have strong leadership...I mean you are running a trade deficit of 33 billion dollars with China and still you don't know how to respond ....

China is not self sufficient in raw material.

But even then China has huge land and resources. China should be able to produce everything they need.

They have 1.4 billion people. They need more food that the country can produce. Specially when they are smarter and richer now. Which mean the demand of more quality food is raising.

Well, clever and rich people are more demanding. When long time ago they need only rice and Vegetables, today, they need meat, fish, etc. Specially meat. They want a better meat.

The price for farm products are so low in China, you can barely make any money growing anything, it's much cheaper to buy from the global market.

China population is main problem, Canada got big land, due to global warming Canada take benefits because increase of cultivative land.
China producing for world because it has industries in almost every house.

Let's imagine when Europeans countries boycott. USA has its networks in almost every developed country.

So with business mind I can not think so that China could losses the nut & bolts of Canadian economy.

.
It's decided by the market, 10 years ago China was a food exporter and now is a net importer, cause growing food will lose money in China, all people go for more value added industries in the cities and only the very old are left to take care of the farmlands, once the food price goes up, people will come back for farming, but now the food price in global market is so cheap, it's not worth it to grow food in China.

Canada should hit the Chinese by stopping exports and cause millions of Chinese to lose their jobs, even if it means prices are a little higher for substitutes.

If US can't cause millions of Chinese to lose their jobs, the chance for Canada to do so is smaller than zero.
You believe Canada would eat this humble pie if it has the ability to hurt China more than the other way around?
