Ambassador of China to India Zhang Yan on Thursday announced one billion US dollar aid for the reconstruction of India's ancient Nalanda University. Yan made the announcement after meeting Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar in Patna. The Chinese envoy would be visiting the ancient centre of learning on Friday and said that China wanted to make the project a success.

Man, China is so GENEROUS handing out so much money to an Indian school while children have no school at many areas in China.

Not India but India's best university.The Chinese have a very strong affinity towards Nalanda where many of their scholars taught and many Chinese students also studied there.It was India's and even perhaps the world's best university(A really really long time ago)But currently in ruins!!It was equivalent to our best IIT's and IIM's during its glory days.

Nalanda is the world's oldest university. It also has deep connections with Buddhism and much of ancient history. Many scholars from Ancient China used to study at Nalanda. At that time, education was free and anyone who wished to study there was accepted.

According to historians, Nalanda flourished between the reign of the Gupta king Śakrāditya (also known as Kumāragupta, reigned 415-55) and 1197 CE, supported by patronage from Buddhist emperors like Harsha as well as later emperors from the Pala Empire.[4] The complex was built with red bricks and its ruins occupy an area of 14 hectares. At its peak, the university attracted scholars and students from as far away as China, Greece, and Persia.[5] Nalanda was sacked by Turkic Muslim invaders under Bakhtiyar Khalji in 1193, a milestone in the decline of Buddhism in India. The great library of Nalanda University was so vast that it is reported to have burned for three months after the Mughals set fire to it, sacked and destroyed the monasteries, and drove the monks from the site. In 2006, Singapore, China, India, Japan, and other nations, announced a proposed plan to restore and revive the ancient site as Nalanda International University.

Chinese Ambassador to India, Zhang Yan has announced one billion US dollar aid for the reconstruction of Nalanda University.

Yan made the announcement after meeting Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar here on Thursday.

"Nalanda University is under the reconstruction. Chinese government has donated one billion US dollars, to support the reconstruction of the Nalanda University," Yan told reporters.

"I will visit the University and discuss with the chancellor or vice-chancellor, how two sides can cooperate with each other to make this project very successful work," he added.

Yan encouraged cultural exchange between Bihar and China other than showing keen interest in the development of the state's agriculture and industry.

"Chinese side is very interested to develop co-operations with the state in many areas, especially in the agricultural industry as well as in infrastructure. Furthermore, we want to develop country exchanges with the state of Bihar," said Yan.

The Nalanda University Bill, 2010, will help begin a Central university in Nalanda district, on the lines of the ancient university, which was founded during the 5th century A.D and became a centre of learning for students from across South and East Asia.
