They have built hundreds near their coasts. To dig in the Chinese claimed waters they need to have deep water drilling tech (3000m). And guess what, China has more money and power to convince Western companies not getting involved in such a risky business.

We've heard so many times these Vietcongs defeating us and will do so with the oil rig crisis. What have they done? Killing innocent foreign workers, setting (wrong) factories ablaze. Dreaming of Russia or USA coming to their aid? Bragging about their military prowess of shooting the rig down.
