Pakistan’s Automotive Development Policy (ADP) 2016-21 will end in June 2021 and this has led many new automakers to announce their arrivals in the Pakistani market.

Earlier this year, Hyundai Nishat introduced the new Tucson in Pakistan to compete with the raging success of the Kia Sportage. It was followed by the announcement last week that Morris Garages (MG) and Proton will be debuting their vehicles in the market as well.

Another company that has been working in silence to make a big impact is the Chinese automaker Changan. Changan has come to Pakistan in partnership with the Master Group which is one of the largest conglomerates in Pakistan.
A few months ago, it was reported by an online car news website that Changan is going to introduce the Alsvin Sedan in Pakistan before the end of the year but there have been no follow-up reports about its official launch date since then.

However, the automaker’s official website reveals that the introduction of the car might be in the works before the end of ADP 2016-21, based on an image of an SUV and a passenger vehicle that it says are “coming soon” to Pakistan.

Various sources have reported that the passenger car is indeed the Alsvin which is expected to be revealed within the next three months.
The Alsvin is a compact sedan that is likely to go up against the Honda City and the Toyota Yaris. The car offers 2 engine options – a 1.4-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that delivers 104 horsepower, and a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that makes 107 horsepower. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed DCT automatic transmission.

The car has basic features like Antilock Braking Systems (ABS) with Electronic Break-force Distribution (EBD) technology, cruise control, hill-start assist, blind-spot monitoring, a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and four airbags. It also offers a modern infotainment system with the latest InCall intelligent interconnect system.

Although it remains to be seen which of Changan’s three SUVs will be debuted in Pakistan, it is likely to be the CS55 – a compact crossover SUV that competes against the likes of the Kia Sportage, the Hyundai Tucson, the Toyota RAV4, and the Honda CR-V in the international market.

The vehicle features a 1.5-liter turbocharged, 4-cylinder petrol engine that makes 156 horsepower and 225 newton-meters of torque which is sent only to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The vehicle also has an array of tech features such as keyless entry and go, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, EBD, brake assist, traction control, electronic stability program (ESP) hill start and descent assist, blind-spot monitoring and assist, automatic headlights with DRLs, sat-nav, smart infotainment system, rain sensors, and six airbags.

Since the automaker has been silent about its plans for the Pakistani market, details about the launch dates and prices are yet unknown. Nonetheless, it is expected that the cars will be launched before the expiration of the ADP 2016-21 and their prices will be market competitive for the automaker to establish itself as a credible threat to the competition.

The reveal of the much speculated Changan Alsvin took place last month. However, the audience was left somewhat high and dry because the CEO of Changan Pakistan decided to not mention the price at the launch.

However, the automaker has finally rewarded the patience of the public by announcing the prices of all variants of the Alsvin today, and it is safe to say that Changan did not disappoint. The following are the prices of all three variants of the Alsvin:
Price.jpg

The automaker has announced that the Alsvin Sedan is now available for booking at all authorized dealerships across Pakistan.

The official launch of the vehicle took place exactly one month ago. The Alsvin was one of the most eagerly awaited cars for the people as it competes in a segment that has a huge market in Pakistan.

Up till now, Toyota Yaris and Honda City were the only two options available for people in this segment. Both of these cars have a starting price well above Changan Alsvin, despite having the same features. The top trim (or full option as people like to say) version of Alsvin is also priced well below Yaris and City’s top variants.

At launch, Changan informed that the Alsvin shall initially be offered in Pakistan as a CBU and that the local assembling of the vehicles shall begin in the 2nd quarter of 2021. We are yet to find out whether that would affect the pricing or the quality of the Alsvin sedan.

For now, given its price, it can safely be said that the Alsvin will be a fierce contender in the subcompact sedan segment of Pakistan.

It has only been a little over a month since the launch of the highly anticipated Changan Alsvin in Pakistan and, as expected, it has been welcomed with an extremely overwhelming response.

Enthusiasts had been awaiting a larger variety of options in the local subcompact sedan segment and Changan seems to have capitalized on this need-based opportunity.

ProPakistani reached out to Changan to determine the actual magnitude of the public’s response, and some interesting details were brought to light in a discussion with the Director Sales of Changan, Syed Shabbir-ud-Din.

Public’s Response

According to Shabbir-ud-Din, there has been an outpour of positive feedback and response for the Alsvin in just over a month since its debut. Changan has had over 29,000 walk-in customers come to 19 of its 3S dealerships all across Pakistan just to have a close look at the vehicle.

He added that the company has received over 17,000 pre-bookings for the Alsvin. All of the customers were also a part of a lucky draw.

WhatsApp-Image-2021-01-11-at-12.05.02-PM.jpeg

He said that the 1,000 draw winners would be prioritized in terms of the booking and delivery of the vehicle, free maintenance for a year, and other value-added services.

Although he declined to disclose the total number of vehicles booked so far, Shabbir-ud-Din remarked that all of the Alsvin units available thus far had been booked and that no new bookings will be taken until July 2021.
He added that based on these facts, saying that the vehicle has received an overwhelming response would be an understatement.

Market Footprint

Talking about Changan’s countrywide presence, Shabbir-ud-Din stated that there are currently 19 operational 3S dealerships all across Pakistan, and that two more will become operational within the next few days, after which the company will have a foothold in all the provinces.

He revealed that it has already begun production of the CKD units of the Alsvin to match its supply to rising demand. He added that the first CKD of the vehicle had been rolled off the assembly line on 14 December 2021 and that Changan will begin selling the CKD version of the vehicle soon.

WhatsApp-Image-2021-01-11-at-12.05.03-PM.jpeg

Shabbir-ud-Din commented that Changan has ensured that only one car is sold against a single CNIC, in a bid to discourage illegal premiums or on culture. He also shared that all the deliveries of cars against the initial bookings shall be made from March 2020.

When asked about the parts and maintenance of the Alsvin, Shabbir-ud-Din said that all the 21 3S dealerships across Pakistan will offer parts and maintenance services to its owners.
He added that the company had arranged for all the parts of the vehicle long before the start of official bookings, which is why the parts and maintenance network is now mature enough to cater to its maintenance.

Why Should Potential Buyers Choose the Alsvin Instead of Competitors?

Shabbir-ud-Din maintained that Changan Alsvin is a superior quality product that comes at a more affordable price than its competitors. He explained that its conveniences and safety features offer are much more configurable, sophisticated, and responsive as compared to the other cars in the same category.

WhatsApp-Image-2021-01-11-at-12.05.03-PM-1.jpeg

He claimed that the Alsvin is for those who have been reminiscing the good old days when a compact sedan could be bought at a reasonable price. He remarked that although Rs. 2.5 million – which is the price of the Alsvin’s top variant – is no small amount, people continue to appreciate the quality, performance, features, and the overall value for money that it offers.

The Future of Changan

When asked about the prospect of further additions to Changan’s lineup in Pakistan, Shabbir-ud-Din confirmed that more products are indeed in the works. Although he did not talk about the type of cars and when they would be debuted, he did disclose that Changan is planning to add a few Electric Vehicles (EVs) to the local lineup.
WhatsApp-Image-2021-01-11-at-12.05.02-PM-1.jpeg

Shabbir-ud-Din talked about Changan being in active pursuit of the localization of parts, and that it is one of the companies that has invested a significant amount of money and resources in Pakistan, which is why it has prioritized the establishment of a complete value chain in Pakistan in order to ensure maximum stability of the business.

He also discussed how the Master Motors Group is already fairly active in terms of the in-house manufacturing of various non-mechanical components of vehicles. He further explained that with the manufacturing resources and expertise in the company’s arsenal, along with its technical support, Changan Master Motors on its way to ensure the localization of mechanical components in Pakistan as well.

Conclusion

While it seems that the hype for the Changan Alsvin has paid off in spades, it should be noted it is currently the best ‘value for money’ product available in the local subcompact sedan segment. However, its actual worth will be determined by the ownership experience of the buyers.

The Alsvin’s build quality, ride quality, reliability, and maintainability will largely be influencing people’s buying decisions, and if the international opinion is to be believed, it is currently one of the best compact sedans available in the market.

So how are these cars in comparison (price vise) with those that are already offered in Pakistan by existing players ?

Its giving a competition to existing players.

Once onwers comment on the quality, and experience , that will be a major deciding factor. If its goods, people are are gonna start switching to these, forcing existing players to either drop the prices, or match the quality.

Its Cheaper than the other Cars in its class but the Higher end version in KSA costs 2 million PKR. If you factor in the higher taxes then the price is Justified. But It puts a new player in the Market that is what we need. From now on as more Competitors enter the market It will be a race to see who actually moves away from assembly to manufacturing. The first one to do it will capture a large part of auto sector for the foreseeable future.
Pakistaniyon ne Mehran hi khareedni hai
It is no longer being produced.

Even I cannot buy such a costly vehicle at the moment but still, I wish that Pakistan has more & more of car manufacturers so the existing monopoly/car manufacturing mafia troika can be controlled. DFSK has already launched one vehicle but that doesn't seems to be enough. Government should invite manufacturers with their units/factories/plants in Pakistan.

While the civic and corolla costs 3.5+ mil Rs with same class and lesser features (no air bags etc), its a good sign for Pakistani market. Now either Toyota, Honda and Suzuki will have to bring their prices down, or match the features or loose the market.

If it's atleast PKR 200K cheaper than its direct competitors than that's something to celebrate. Btw we should have a proper system where to scrutinize new coming cars and rate it based on safety and other features. And only allow those that offer atleast modest form of safety to passengers. Those cars on Pakistani roads, some 90% have no safety measures in them.

That's almost 1 million price difference. If these new cars provide even average safety and performance... I think they will be really hit soon. First we had 1000cc cheapest car and now these. Awesome.

Btw I am not a car enthusiast. I don't know how to drive (by choice) but still want people of my country to be treated equal humans by these car mafias.

It will give a tough time to honda city and Toyota yaris which are 2 and 3 lacs more than Alsvin respectively but still I thought price should had not be more than 20-22 lacs for a new brand. Difference of 4 to 5 lacs would had wipped out Honda city sales as compared to 2-3 lacs
